This is Poolside Chat,
where every week we answer your questions
on how to fix and maintain your swimming pool.
Poolside Chat is presented by INYOPools.com
"Helping pool owners find the right parts since 2001."
Now, here's your host, Matt and Rob.
Hello. And welcome back to the hard ending episode of Poolside Chat presented by INYOPools.com
I'm Rob.
You're bringing the heat today. You're really intense.
– I'm Matt. I got to...
bring up the energy level. I wasn't ready.
Okay. Alright. We're doing this. Woo!
All right, we have a question
from Cali, from Rancho Cucamonga, California.
♫ "Going, going, back, back, to Cali, Cali." ♫
"The stem of my multiport diverter broke.
Should I get a whole key seal assembly, or just replace the diverter?"
Rob?
Well, that's a tough question.
I would normally recommend replacing the whole key and seal assembly.
Replacement of the diverter isn't the easiest thing to do.
Matt, we actually have a prop this week.
Could you hand me that KMC key and seal assembly?
Those are hard words.
– They are hard to say. I'm tripping over myself here. – To say and read.
Basically, if you think you want to change the diverter,
this is the stem that he was referring to in the question
– or she, Cali was referring to in the question. – Yes. That's a girl's name.
Yes, basically, the stem is broke,
so, what you got to do is, compressed this
to pop out the pin to get this out. It's not that simple. It almost takes two people.
You'll need somebody to press down while somebody taps out the pin.
And then getting it back together is not easy either.
But if you're up to the task,
the diverter, and the steam is an option.
Yes.
But, you replacing the key and seal assembly is easier,
because you just back out these screws
take out the old one, put in the new one. You're done.
Yes. And I just want to hold it.
Yes, but getting back to replacing just the diverter,
we actually have a how to guide.
I think we even have a video on the subject on our website.
There's probably a link somewhere,
– on the screen possibly, maybe, it's possibly somewhere there. – Possibly here.
But, if you take --
One of the steps is trying to compress it
to get the --
to get the handle back on, to tap the pin in.
And in the picture it shows someone with two feet on it.
Yeah.
Because, it takes a lot of strength to get this thing.
Because, if you take a look at this spring
-- we can't get a really good close-up --
but that's a good gauge metal on there.
It's going to take a lot of strength, and
unless you've a n orangutang, as I said before,
you'll probably not going to be able to do it with just one person.
So, easy thing is,
pop out six screws, pop this bad boy in there,
and your job is finite.
Yep.
Thank you for the question, Cali. It was most enlightening.
I think so.
– Borderline bodacious. – Yes.
