It is National Pie Day and we're baking up a winning concoction. Next! Thanks Dave. Who
doesn't like a sweet treat at the end of the week, at the end of the weekend or heck, any
day for that matter? Especially today, because today is National Pie Day. And a good friend
of ours, Devin Davis, is the Junior winner of the National Pie Championship for... what
was it for.. The APC Crisco National Pie Championship. When was that? It was last April. And it is
coming up again this April 25th. But you are in a different category now. Yes Adult. You've
grown up. I've grown up. Are you eighteen? Yes ma'am I will be eighteen. Congratulations.
Thank you so what are you making for us today? Today we are doing, only what a Plant City
boy would do in the middle of the Strawberry Season. We are making a Strawberry Shortcake
Pie All right. What is this? This is a mixture of cream cheese, and marshmallow fluff, a
yum it is kind of a spoof off a dip my mom always made for strawberries when we were
younger. Did you make this recipe yourself? I did. Do you experiment a lot in the kitchen?
I do. I love just to get in there and just to work. And whatever comes to mind to work
on it. Go ahead get that whatever it is that is over there. So once we get the dip. We
put strawberries on top. We make a glaze that goes over the top of the strawberries. All
you do is take a couple cups of water and some strawberries sliced up and we boil that
together with a little bit of sugar. What do you want me to do? Put that in there? Now
you are a Senior in high school? Yes. As we continue to prepare this lovely pie tell us
what you are going to do at the end of the year? Once I graduate I would like to go to
culinary school at the Art Institute in Tampa and then I would also like to double major
in accounting to have something to fall back on and for the business side of things. Right
because you need to know how to. Smart move. That really is a smart move. Ok the Food Network
has that competition. Are you going to try that out? Now that you are a little older?
Yes that is what I'm going to try to end up doing. I'm going to try and get into as many
competitions as I can. Once I hit the 18 mark it all opens up. To think you got your start
right here on Good Day. OK so keep going. What is your best thing in the kitchen? What
is your favorite thing to cook? Well anything. I love to cook up steak. Meat and Potatoes
or sweets it doesn't really matter. Do you like fried chicken? I love fried chicken.
Good you can make us fried chicken. That looks good. That goes in that pie crust. You can
use the folder thing. Once you spread that around we take the strawberries and we layer
them on top just like strawberry shortcake. So you have a finished product. That is what
it is going to look like as soon as you put the strawberries in place. I'll walk over
here. Sometimes you just need a spoon. Or just grab a strawberry and dip it in. Your
mom and dad cut one for us. Should we try it? Oh yes. Do you put it in the fridge to
let that set? Put the glaze over the top to set the strawberries. The crust is actually
a shortbread crust. So we take shortbread cookies and we crush them up with a little
butter and sugar to make a crumb crust as take on the classic strawberry shortcake.
Using that marshmallow is brilliant. Oh yeah it really fluffs it up and makes it a lot
sweeter because the strawberries are a little tart. It really sweetens it a lot. Devin,
