Flamenco is the essence of southern Spain. IN 2010 uNESCOLearning Spanish is incomplete
without being exposed to and trying to understand Flamenco. In 2010, UNESCO, the cultural department
of the United Nations, declared that flamenco was one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and
Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Flamenco has three basic components:, toque(sound)
, cante (song) and baile (dance) The dancer leads the performance . She/He
sets the tone and feel of the routine. If one is lucky, one will experience "duende"
from the dancer et all. " Duende" is an infusion of soul and spirit that drive the dance. Everything
else complements and expands the dancer's performance. Toque is any sound that accompanies
the dancer: From the guitar, clapping (palmas) , stomping ( zapateado), snapping of the fingers
(pitos), cajón ( drum beat on a box), castanets, to shouts of "Olé"
Cante is the oral expression of Flamenco but it is more than singing, It is the voice which
conveys solemnity, grief , joy and depth; the history and feeling of a culture.
