Prime Minister: Look, this is beautiful country Barnaby, but a lot of people here are suffering.
We’ve got to look after their short-term income needs and we’ve got to do something
to enable them to get back on their feet for the medium-term. I guess the great thing about
this trip though has been the incredible grit and resilience of country people. Country
people aren’t victims, they’re fighters. They’re fighting for their future and they’re
fighting for our future, because without a really dynamic agricultural sector, our country’s
economy won’t be strong.
Barnaby Joyce: Yeah Tony, I think it’s amazing if I said to you, “We’ll make a buck out
of that”, I reckon you’d be pretty hungry and so would I. But these people do it and
they do it because it’s goodness. You know they’re providing food, they’re providing
fibre, they’re keeping the food on the table. They’re not only feeding Australians, they’re
feeding the world and once in a blue moon something happens that is out of the range
that you’re able to manage it from your own resources. And therefore because we’re
decent people in Australia, you have to step in and say look, I’m not going to let my
fellow Australian wallow in the dust, I can’t be Father Christmas, but I’m going to see
what I can do to help. And that’s why it’s great to get out here and see what we can
do and hear it from them.
Prime Minister: And that’s why we’ve got some announcements to make in a week or so
hey?
