My name is Ghaith El-Mohtar, my program is Political Science, and I'm in fourth year.
I chose to study at uOttawa because I studied in French on the Quebec side and wanted to
skip Cegep, and continue studying in French and English. So this really was allowed here
at uOttawa and it really permitted me to do that. In addition, Parliament is at a stone-throw
away, and if you really want to be in the action, there's loads of opportunities for
internships, there's a very thriving environment for politics here, so I really felt that this
was the right place to be. What I like the most about Political Science is the political
theory aspect of it. So I'm really interested in one: multiculturalism and two: green political
theory, and even where they intersect I find is really interesting. uOttawa has a lot of
great experiential learning opportunities for social sciences, I took advantage of several.
One was Model United Nations program, where you get credits for simulating a United Nations
experience, and that was great. You basically prepare for it for months, and then you have
a one week long simulation where you pretend to be a delegate in the United Nations. Loads
of campus activities on uOttawa's campus, there's a lot of student life. I in particular
took advantage of the uOttawa Greens, which Is a campus club here, and there's also, because
we're in Ottawa, there's a thriving political environment where you can go and be exposed
to all these different viewpoints from all these different partis and clubs. If you're
a first year, I'd say just get involved. You will meet a lot of people, university is not
just for education, it's especially for the people that you meet and the networks that
you create, so if you find a club that's suited with your interest, go and get involved. When
I'm not in class I like to do a lot of things, one of them is playing piano, in particular
I like romantic, classical and modern music. I'm also a reservist in the Canadian Forces
and I find it's a really good opportunity to do public service and service the country.
In addition to that I also read when I'm outside of class, besides the boat-load of assignments
that we have to do. And in particular I like political theory, political thought, but I
also like reading novels, like Game of Thrones.
