This tutorial will help you navigate the Libraries home page and determine which search is right for you.
There are numerous ways to search for resources from the Libraries home page.
The default tab for this site contains a search box for our library catalog.
This catalog includes books, journals, magazines, and newspapers, electronic resources like ebooks, online journals, and video games, videos and more.
There is also an easy way to search for similar items in the UW System.
It is important to note, this catalog search will not find individual articles.
If you are looking for articles, you have several options.
Let's start by clicking the on the Articles tab.
The search box on the articles tab, retrieves articles from 3 general databases.
Use this when searching for a small amount of articles on a general topic.
In you need in-depth, subject specific, or many scholarly articles- click the By Subject link.
From this By Subject page you can choose a subject that matches your topic or field of study.
It will often be to your benefit to try various Subjects because this will lead you to different perspectives on your topic.
Each subject link will lead you to a list of databases with information related to that subject.
You can use the search box to retrieve articles from all the checked databases or click on any database title to search in that database individually.
Use the Databases tab in order to find a database in which to search for articles.
If you know which database you would like to use, type the database name into the search box or use the alphabetical list below.
If you don't know which database you would like to use, click the By Subject link, it's the same one we explained on the Articles tab.
Use the journal tab when you already have information about an article or journal and want to know if the UW has access.
This might be the case if you found reference to an article from a bibliography, the free web, or someone else.
Just enter in the journal title and year and then click search.
Remember, Individual articles are not found in the library catalog.
The Articles search tab searches just three general databases.
The By Subject link leads to finding all our databases arranged by subject.
The Journals tab is how you can find if the UW has access to specific articles and/or journals.
If you have any questions, ask a librarian!
