I came to Evanston over 20 years ago as a newly-divorced single mom, looking for a community
that my daughter could receive a great education in, in a diverse setting.
I fell in love with Evanston because I love the richness of its diversity and the passion
of its people. I'm now remarried and a mother of three. My
oldest, Rachel, graduated from ETHS in 2003, and I have two sons here, Ian. who's a junior,
and Blake, who's a freshman. My vision for ETHS is that all students be
afforded an excellent education and have equal opportunity to all available resources necessary
for a rich and rewarding experience inside and outside of the classroom.
I want to continue the culture of high expectations. How do we accomplish this? I think, number
one, by make sure all of our children are achieving at their highest level.
Number two, making sure we continue our goal of retaining and hiring top-rate instructors.
Three, having meaningful and real collaborations with Distrct 65 so our children can have a
consistent curriculum. And, four, making sure the district remains
fiscally responsible in tough times. I'm running for the board because I feel strongly
that I possess values, experience and insights into our community.
I've been lucky enough to spend the past 16 years serving our community in a voluteer
capacity. I'm currently serving my second term as co-president
of the ETHS PTSA, and I also served in 2000-2002. I'm on the board of the Moran Center, which
is a youth advocacy group providing integrated legal and social work for low-income youth.
And I'm also a member of the Leadership Evanston alumni committee.
I've done everything in this town from tutoring to coaching basketball to directing middle
school plays to actually representing the PTSA at a minority student network conference.
I have a working knowledge of how the schools function and have forged relationships with
current and past administrators. I want to be a bridge to all the unique communities
of Evanston. As a school board member I will never forget that as an elected official I
will listen to all my constituents with the understanding that we all want the same thing
-- well-rounded, highly-educated students who are confident enough to navigate the world
after ETHS. Thank you.
