Now I'm going to show you how to measure and cut the fabric for a cushion. We're going
to start with a bottom cushion. And it's a nice rectangular cushion. We can measure it
with a tape measure. We're going to measure from seam to seam right there where the piping
ends. You want to measure from, this cushion has piping, from seam to seam right at the
piping. And that's 26 inches. Now, too, we'll add to that 26 inches a 5/8ths inch seam allowance
on both sides. And 5/8ths plus 5/8ths is 1 1/4. So to the 26 inches we will add 1 1/4
inch. And the other side going the other way is 24 inches. And again we want to add a 5/8ths
seam allowance to that measurement and 2 times 5/8ths. So 5/8ths here and 5/8ths here is
1 1/4 inch so this
measurement that we will cut will be 25 and 1/4 inches. Now I'll show you how to measure
the end to cut the fabric for the front panel of the bottom cushion. And we're going to
need to do this in two pieces. A front piece that will go from the side of the cushion
all the way around to the other side. And then the other part of the side cushion is
going to be this zipper panel. And the zipper panel comes around the sides about 3 or 4
inches. And if you do this it'll help to get your cushions in and out of the cover when
you're finished with it. So you want that back zipper panel to lap over, curl around
the sides of the back and down the side a bit. Okay? So our first measurement is going
to be how wide we need for our side panel. And again you measure from seam to seam. And
from seam to seam it measures 5 inches. And to that 5 inches we're going to add a seam
allowance for both sides of 5/8ths inch. And 5/8ths inch plus 5/8ths inch is 1 1/4. So
our side panel is going to be 6 1/4 inches wide. And then we'll measure from here, the
side, all the way around the front, oops, and to the other side. And we have over 60
inches. Now the width of our fabric and the way we're cutting the fabric we only have
60 inch widths. And this is over 60 inches. So I'm going to cut 2 strips and then I'll
trim them to the right length later. So I'll cut 2 strips of 60 inch by 6 1/4 inches for
the side panels. And I'll trim off the excess layer. Next I'll show you how to measure and
cut for this zipper panel on the bottom cushion. Now we need a 6 1/4 inch panel in the back
also but here we're going to insert a zipper in the middle. And in order to insert the
zipper in the middle we need some seam allowances. So 2 more seam allowances of 5/8ths inches
will give us an additional amount of fabric of 1 1/4 inches. So we're going to cut the
panel for this back section 7 1/2 inches. And then we'll cut it in half and insert the
zipper.
