I was involved in a case in which a high net worth
individual obtained a postnuptial agreement and then
sought to get a divorce. Hi. My name is Eric Engel. I'm a
divorce attorney with the Engel Law Group here in Seattle,
Washington. In that case, the individual obtained what is
called a postnuptial agreement. Now postnuptial agreement is an
agreement in which the husband or wife spell out who's going to
get what property in the event they get a divorce. The key
distinction about a postnuptial agreement is they enter into the
agreement after they got married. In this particular
agreement, the husband thought he could protect his millions by
entering into a postnuptial agreement and then getting a
divorce right afterwards. Well, it didn't work out so well for
him. And the reason why is because he essentially forced
his wife into getting a postnuptial agreement and
threatened her that if she didn't get the postnuptial
agreement, he would was going to get out of the marriage - which
he did anyways. Why am I telling you this? I'm telling you this
because you've gotten a postnuptial agreement and you're
thinking about getting divorced. You need to be aware of what
your risk is in the event you decide to get a divorce. I deal
with these sorts of questions every day. Pick up the phone and
give me a call at 206-625-9800. Thank you for watching my video.
