You just got out of jail after being arrested for a DWI in
Lubbock, Texas. Where's my car, dude? That's the question. If
you've been arrested for a DWI most likely your car has been
towed. Hello, my name is Stephen Hamilton and I'm a board
certified criminal defense attorney in Lubbock, Texas. I
practice in Lubbock and the surrounding areas. If this has
happened to you. You've been arrested, you just got out of
jail, the very first thing you probably want to do is find your
car and get it out of impound. Every county has a contract with
a towing company. So, for example, if you got arrested in
Lubbock County - right now in March of 2011 - the wrecker
service is Lubbock Wrecker. And you need to call Lubbock Wrecker
to arrange a time to go get your car. Now there are a couple of
issues that you need to be aware of. First, they're going to need
ID from you. And if you've just been arrested for DWI, the
chances are the police officer took your driver's license. So,
you need to have another form of identification. If you don't
have that then you need to bring the person who co-owns or owns
the car with you. So if you're a Texas Tech student, Mom and Dad
own the vehicle, they're going to need to call Lubbock Wrecker.
If they're out of town, they don't have to fly in to Lubbock
to do it from Dallas but they at least got to call the wrecker
company. If you have another form of ID, most of the time the
wrecker company is going to take it. When you go in and get your
vehicle, it's very important that after you pay the impound
fee you take a look at your vehicle. See if anything is
missing, or has been ruffled through. Because the chances are
when you got arrested for a DWI the arresting agency - whether
it was Lubbock Police Department or Texas Tech or the Department
of Public Safety - they will have done an inventory of
everything that was in your vehicle. And we want to know if
anything is missing. I'm not saying that the police stole it.
What I'm saying is you need to make sure that the things that
are in your vehicle are still in your possession. So that if
there is a problem, you can notate it early on and we can
start calling the proper people, whether it's the tow company or
the police department. If you have questions about an
inventory search of your vehicle or where your vehicle is after
it's been towed, pick up the phone and call me. My office
number is 806-794-0394. We'll set up a time for you to come
in, visit with me, so we can talk about the towing and the
inventory of your vehicle. That's it for today's video tip.
I'm Stephen Hamilton. Thank you for watching
and have a great day!
