Many of our friends chose Stuffed Cabbage
However the majority chose Daigaku Imo.
So we'll be making that today.
Today we don't have that many ingredients.
Very simple recipe today.
Sweet potato.
About 1 pound.
It's about 500 grams.
We have some honey.
We need 1/4 cup of honey.
1 tsp soy sauce.
1 tsp black sesame seeds.
Or as much as you like.
And a little bit of salt.
Simple ingredients for a spectacular dish.
So what do we do first mom?
Let's first get rid of the ends.
We'll cut it into bite-sized pieces.
Oh, this potato is hard.
Yes it is. Careful mom please.
After cutting, put it in the water here?
Yes that's exactly what we'll do.
You can keep the skin on if you like.
But I like to peel the potatoes.
Shall I put the trash in this plastic bag?
Yes dear. Please.
Should I cut it in half?
Yeah that's good.
Just dump the potatoes in the water.
So cut it into half or quarters like this.
Basically bite-sized pieces right mom?
Yes, exactly.
You can use a vegetable peeler if you have one.
That's true.
Today's potato was kind of big mom.
Mom, do you eat sweet potatoes back in Hawaii?
I do. I LOVE sweet potatoes.
I really love sweet potatoes!
OK, all the trash is in this plastic bag.
You see how white this is?
OH yeah!
Now let's rinse the potatoes.
Just put them in a colander like this.
Shinchan turn off the water for me.
Ok, this is good.
The potatoes are washed clean.
Blot them dry with a paper towel.
If they are wet, the oil will splatter right mom?
Yes the oil will get all over your kitchen!
Be careful mom because the oil is hot!
When the surface begins to puff up
that's a good sign.
I made this a long time ago
I hardly ever make this anymore.
It's only me that likes sweet potatoes back home.
Mom you've always loved sweet potatoes.
I LOVE them!
You want to fry them on a medium-high temperature.
When the surface starts to puff up it's almost ready.
While we're waiting for the potatoes,
Let's make the sauce.
Ok! So first here's the honey.
and the soy sauce.
Mix it well.
A little bit of salt.
You see how it's all puffy?
OH yeah!
It's just about done.
Oh yeah, it's all puffy and golden brown!
Wouldn't this be great with just a little salt mom?
I agree!
They fried up so crispy!
You want to mix the sauce while potatoes are hot.
There are many ways of making this sauce.
But other ways are quite difficult.
This is the easiest way as far as I know.
Mix really well.
Doesn't it look great dear?
It looks awesome mom!
Finally sprinkle on some sesame seeds.
The sesame seeds add a nice toasty flavor.
Also adds some color to the dish I think.
I hope it turned out well.
I really don't know...
Mom, you haven't made this in decades!
But it sure looks good!
Ok, it's done!
Mom, I think you did a fantastic job!
Yes, I think so too! :)
It's very beautiful!
The color is nice.
It smells amazing.
I can't wait. I gotta try it now!
Mom, it's really good.
Like, beyond amazing!
Dear, you always take the first bite don't you?
Yes.
That's like TabiEats rules.
Satoshi come here and try some.
Shinchan's going to eat it all up!
The thing is
Mom's Daigaku Imo isn't overly sweet.
That's so true.
Usually it's a lot sweeter.
Right. Sometimes too sweet.
You can't eat too much of it at one sitting.
This version is just right.
How is it mom?
It's been so long my favorite Daigaku Imo baby.
It's very tasty!
Because they are bite-sized pieces
They are so easy to pop into your mouth.
It's so crispy on the outside.
The best thing about this is how easy it is to make!
I was actually surprised at how easy it was!
Easy is best don't you think?
Mom you are a genius.
No dear. I'm just lazy.
So you're a lazy genius.
Yes, exactly!
Mom what will you be making next time?
Hmmm....let's see...
How about some kind of meat this time?
Oh yeah!
Everybody loves meat.
How about something Hawaiian?
How about Kalua Pork?
Everybody loves that.
We love that too!
It's quite easy to make.
and really tasty.
But my impression of Kalua Pork is that it's difficult to make and time-consuming.
But your version is easy and can be made easily at home right mom?
Yes that's right.
I make it a lot at home.
Ok, what about another dish?
How about Garlic Shrimp?
Kahuku-style Garlic shrimp?
You love that Satoshi!
Ok, I can make that.
Two Hawaiian local style dishes.
Let's say a little something to everybody mom.
Please try this dish out everybody.
Thank you so much.
Thank you everybody.:)
See you again!
