It is a plant native of the Mediterranean region but nowadays is cosmopolitan.
Is an annual herbaceous plant between 0.5 and 1 meter of height and axonomorf root.
Pubescent at the base, and glabrous on the rest of the plant. It branched with branches spread wide.
Leaves are alternate, without stipules. The lowers sharply divided and a large terminal lobe. The uppers not so divided, sessile with narrow margins.
The flowers are large with 4 sepals and 4 petals shaped yellow cross and grouped in corymb
The fruit is a silique of 2 cm long with conical peaks. It contains numerous red-brown color seed whit lattice surface.
It's active ingredient is the sinigrin that in the presence of mirosina, decomposes alilp isothiocyanate, which is causing the taste of mustard.
In medicine, the mustard oil is used as as topical rubefacient. However, its importance lies in the culinary uses, especially in eastern countries such as India.
Used black mustard oil to marinate salads and seeds as seasoning some plates.
