To commemorate World Natural Disasters Day, this Wednesday, a team from the Ministry of Social Solidarity for Natural Disasters,
working with the Government, IOM, Oxfam and the Red Cross of Timor-Leste carried out activities such as handing out leaflets to communities
Disaster Management Coordinator, Luis Pedro Pinto, said in his interview with Timor Today at the Palácio do Governo that,
the purpose of these activities was to share information with communities, so that they can prepared themselves better from natural disasters.
Luis Pinto added that, the initiative for this program itself had come from the Government,
the Red Cross, volunteers from Timor-Leste, and other partners.
The activities to share information with communities took place in coastal areas like Areia Comoro, Becora and others.
The information that the team was sharing with the community was on how to take care when
there was an earthquake, landslides, and also how to prevent flooding.
Funds for this program came from thei Government, USAID, and the International Red Cross Federation.
During the day, organizaers handed out brochures with comprehensive information about natural disasters.
The total budget for the program was less than US$10000.
