Forensic Toxicology by Research is a relatively new Postgraduate Degree and it's really to
give students an opportunity to get really involved in a forensic research project. We
are very fortunate in that we have a full range of analytical facilities that you would
expect to find in a forensic laboratory, ranging from electron microscopy, mass spectrometry,
high-pressure liquid chromatography, so essentially students are going to be able to use and get
familiar with the functioning of this different instrumentation in preparation for going out
into the workplace.
>> Bournemouth University is a good university to do Forensic Toxicology by Research because
you get a lot of hands-on experience. You get quite a lot of time carrying out a lot
of techniques and when you're looking for a job they prefer you to have practical experience
rather than just being taught.
>> The concept of the Masters by Research degree is to provide students with a leading
edge over their competitors from other universities. As an outcome students will also leave with
a publication either in preparation or in press.
>> The facilities at Bournemouth University are great, all the labs that we get to use
and there's lots of time and space to get your project done and your research. The best
thing about my course is the help that you get from the PhD students and the demonstrators
because they really have the time to help you step by step.
>> Some of our students have presented work in major international conferences in Bonn,
Richmond Virginia, Chicago, and hopefully it's going to help our students get those
very sought after jobs.
>> During my Forensic Toxicology in Masters by Research I spent a week out in Sao Paolo
in the medical legal institute and had the opportunity to work with some of the top names
out in Brazil and it was just a really exciting opportunity.
>> In the masters year you really get the practical experience that will really give
you a step up on your CV when you apply for future jobs and maybe you'll have a bit more
of an idea of what it's going to be like to work in the real field.
>> We also have students that are working on the characterisation of seizures that come
from the Glastonbury pop festival. This is to look for and try and identify new compounds
as they appear. We believe that because our projects are extended research projects we
can get a great deal more out of it and so can our commercial partners.
>> I think students should choose Bournemouth University because it's a well-facilitated
university with all the right instrumentation and also the lecturers have very good links
to the outside world so it's just a really positive place to be.
