JJ Abrams’s producing partner discusses the upcoming Star Trek film and a possible
third installment. Hey guys I’m Melana Scantlin and Deadline.com has the details.
So what do you need to know about the upcoming Star Trek sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness?
Well first off, it’s not a “sequel” per se.
According to director JJ Abrams’s producing partner Bryan Burke, anyone can enjoy Star
Trek Into Darkness, even if they haven’t watched its 2009 predecessor. He tells Digital
Spy, “It's its own thing."
Burke sits down with the site to talk about the predicted summer blockbuster, which reunites
the new generation of Starship Enterprise crewmembers, including Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana,
and Zachary Quinto.
It also introduces Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch as a new, mysterious villain -- but
Burke assures longtime devotees that there’s some throwback elements in the script, saying
“One of the things is that the movie will always be for Star Trek fans. [...] There
are tons of references and nods [to the original series]."
Burke goes on to reveal that there’s already been chatter surrounding a third film in this
series -- which could hit theaters in 2016. He tells Digital Spy, “We’re definitely
talking about the next one, but [...] we don’t want to wait four years.”
He adds, “[2016] is going to be a big year to celebrate, hopefully.”
But with JJ Abrams’s busy schedule -- which includes starting on the new Star Wars film
-- there’s speculation that the third film may see a new director behind the camera.
Burke avoids the issue of balancing both franchises by joking, “The only thing in common [between
Star Wars and Star Trek] is the word 'Star', which is why we're going to do the Ringo Starr
movie as well. We'll corner the market!"
Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters on May 17th. I’m Melana Scantlin. See these arrows?
