>> [Background Music] When I was a child,
my grandfather called it out to my parents
that I was going to be an engineer.
He always, like, saw me playing with things.
I was so curious and alert as a child.
So, being a mechanical engineer, I feel like I'm kind
of fulfilling his dream for me.
>> My dream job is to work for Google.
Through my coursework in marketing,
I found that I really enjoy qualitative research as well
as new product development, and I have a strong interest
in social media as well.
>> International business kept popping up in my research.
So, then it just kind of seemed like a really good idea.
And I took it to my mom.
And she was finally like, "We can do that."
>> When I found out that I received these two scholarships,
I had no idea.
I was so excited.
I was running around my house jumping up
and down with my parents.
>> My first reaction was to call my parents
and just tell them I was so excited,
and because of the scholarship I didn't have
to work a job whenever I was in college.
I could focus on my interests--
the schoolwork and the involvement
that I have really come to love.
>> I broke down crying.
I think I said thank you about 20 times,
and then I called my mom.
I managed to get the words "I'm going
to Penn State" out of my mouth.
And it was just an emotional time.
It meant I could do so much more with my life now.
I could do what I wanted to do.
I could go and study in the States.
I could travel.
I could do so many different things
that I didn't think I could do five minutes before I got
that phone call.
>> The Harriet Behrend Ninow Memorial Scholarship was the one
that really surprised me.
I felt really honored and humbled to see
that one pop up in my radar.
>> It felt good to receive the Leadership Scholarship
from the Behrend Council of Fellows, that they think
so highly of me and that they have never met me before,
but they think that I am worth the investment.
>> Getting scholarships from being a leader or even just
in my field just motivates me to keep doing better
and keep giving back to this campus.
>> Having received these scholarships, I've been able
to not worry about the financials of everything
and focus really on developing myself as a student leader.
I've been able to develop great time management skills.
I feel pretty confident in how I can handle different conflicts.
And I've seen myself grow.
>> If my donors were here today, I would tell them thank you
so much for recognizing my hard work and dedication
to this campus, but words will never be enough
to express how grateful I am
for every scholarship I have received
in my time here at Behrend.
>> If the donor were here today I'd say thank you
and probably give them a hug.
The scholarships have allowed me to develop those skills
that I think I needed to shape who I am.
>> If my donors were here, I would just
like to say thank you.
They're two small words, but they're all I can find right now
because there are so many words I could say,
but I can't find them.
So thank you.
>> Employers are focused on students
who have good interpersonal skills.
And one of the things
that I think students benefit greatly by,
through the leadership activities they participate in,
is the interpersonal skills, working with other students,
organizing other students, having other students buy
into a vision, and in some cases create a vision for the type
of activity that they want to see on campus.
Leadership scholarships are designed
to help students maximize their experience in the
out of class while they're at Behrend.
