Good morning posture pupils this is Paula Moore the posture doctor and creator of Posture
Videos. This morning we are going to look at breakfast and in particular breakfast cereals
and why you just might want to think again before putting that amount of sugar into your
body or into the bodies of your children.
So first of all you're going to want to look at the side of your cereal box, because this
is where the nutrition is available for you to read. You'll notice on the side that there
are two columns. One is the amount of cereal per bowl and one is the amount of cereal per
bowl with milk. So the average bowl of cereal contains about 55 grams, which it says there.
Then we want to scan down and look at the sugar content. So let's look at that now.
Easy to find. Again we are going to look at the right side column there. Let's just get
that in focus. So we've got sugars without the milk and also with the milk and as most
of you have your cereals with milk, let's look at that. So in an average bowl of cereal
with milk, we are expecting, in this 'healthy' cereal, to get 22 grams of sugar.
Noise of cereal being poured.
Now let's take a look at how much 22 grams of sugar really is. Why don't we measure it
in little packs of sugar. So I picked this up at a little local cafe this morning. Let's
see how many grams in a pack.
Four grams in a pack. Now, your average 'healthy' bowl of cereal had 22 grams, so you've got
about five of these packs. Five and a half of these packs, per bowl of cereal. Now some
packs obviously come in fewer gram amounts but for your average pack with four grams,
that's five packs per bowl. Now if you're having a bowl of cereal seven days a week,
or giving it to your kids, you can count on 35 packages of sugar every week. Are you happy
putting that inside your body? Seriously, are you? It's your health, you might want
to think again.
