It's a great school because you get
hands-on experience right away from your freshman year.
There's a lot of different types of people here; So you can
always find some group to belong to, and that makes
you feel at home.
A lot of the programs that the schools offer, you really have
to take advantage of in order to make the most out of your years
and It's definitely important to get involved when
you're in college. Start doing what you want to do.
Start going towards your -- what your education is paying -- you
know, what you're paying for.
River Region is a student-run newscast.
It's aired live four days a week and we actually have two
anchors, a weather person and a sports person.
The people in-studio doing cameras and we have video
operators, audio operators, technical directors, and
the directors of course.
So there's so many people working together to just produce
one newscast, and it's great because everyone knows each
other and everyone's working together to get this done
four days a week every week.
There's also alt.news.
It's a great program. It's more field production.
They actually they produce, and they shoot and
edit their own stuff. They make their
own crews for it.
I know alt.news has won many Emmys for all the things
that they've done. And they've come a long way.
They've been running for ten years.
Now we have Studio A.
We're bringing in bands. Mostly local bands because
that's who we have connections to.
To be able to produce something and see the finished
product is pretty amazing.
The faculty here is awesome' um faculty and staff.
They're very helpful and they teach you so much.
They're really easy to work with and they really are interested
in making us better photographers.
And they work with us, like they'll work with us one
on one if we need help.
Like I know a lot of friends that have kind of gone off and
done independent projects, and the teachers are always there.
They're so open and they just love working with us and
we love working with them.
For photography, we have a group called Photogenesis.
Which works to'we go on different field trips just to
go shoot in different places.
We put on shows. Like we have a show up at the
University Museum right now.
Just hearing what people have to say about other people and
seeing what other people did helps me build on
what I want to do.
SIU was the perfect place.
I..I heard about their great photojournalism program,
and I just thought, it's in state -- perfect, I'll go.
The Daily Egyptian is a student-run independent
newspaper here at Southern Illinois.
Working with the Daily Egyptian, you know, you learn how a
newspaper works better than you do in a classroom.
After working two years so far with the Daily Egyptian I
realized I love shooting sports.
I've gone cross-country with the football team, basketball.
I've gotten to go up in a plane to take a picture
of Bald *** Cross.
I've shot a motocross competition.
You get to do a lot of fun stuff like that.
I really couldn't be happier.
This is a really good program, and the faculty
here is really amazing.
They really genuinely care about the students.
There's always something going on in this college and people
are always working on stuff.
It's just interesting to just walk through the halls and
see all the different projects going on.
I know people that have come from different states even.
Not Illinois, but people come from different states just to
come to SIU because they know that the communications
program is very good.
