The most rewarding part of my job
is
seeing the joy and laughter of students who come into the library
and want to read a great book,
may want to on ask my expertise on how to present
for history class or science class
and interact with us on Twitter.
The way our library transforms people's lives
is that we have space that is
safe, nurturing and invites participation,
providing expertise that students
otherwise in an urban setting would not get. We created an oasis
for students, for faculty, for parents
and the same time we were impacting student achievement.
Our literacy rate increased. Our
reading for pleasure
increased across the district and we went maybe from 300
circulations a year to
thousands. We have students coming to a library
in an urban setting where
they may not be the best readers. They may want to get in
some type of trouble, but they choose to come to a space that is safe
and nurturing. That impacts student achievement.
That's how we transform their lives What the award means to me
is that it's a validation up all my hard work
and it shows that libraries can be at the nucleus of an educational setting.
