Gamers get your ears in gear—details about a new Xbox 720 were leaked on document cloud
service Scribd in a business document that is allegedly Microsoft’s.
The Verge reports the document describes a new console with a performance bump of six
times the Xbox 360, recording functionality for TV, and 3d gaming.
And Forbes says it’s about time—noting, if this holds true, the console will receive
bigger upgrades than it has for the past seven years.
“There’s no doubt that the Xbox 360 is in dire need of an update. The console was
released back in November of 2005, and while it has seen some updates, they’ve been related
to lowering the costs and improving the reliability of the console.”
And its not just a new Xbox that’s breaking out.
Web Pro News gives a rundown of the document which describes a new Kinect, Blu-ray player
and the augmented reality system Project Fortazela with SmartGlass -- an app for tablets and
other devices that can serve as a second screen.
“Microsoft will launch its main assault on the living room and everywhere you go with
a pair of Kinect Glasses in 2014. The document says it will allow ‘seamless integration
of the digital world with the physical world.’”
Gaming site, Joy Stiq, notes the report dates back to around August 2010. Engadget says
the latest fervor about the new gizmos might be taking things out of context.
“...even if this document is the real deal, though, there's some question about how useful
it is for predicting the future. There's a good chance Microsoft used this document as
a sort of "wishlist" for the ideal "Xbox 720," with features hitting the cutting room floor
as practicalities rear their ugly head during development.”
PC Mag says Microsoft has made it very clear it will not reveal a new Xbox until after
2012. But if you don’t want to get your hopes up about the 720, don’t worry, there
might be something out sooner to look forward to.
“There is something in store for Xbox 360 owners before the year is out, however—the
document indicates that Microsoft plans to release XTV service and apps for the 360 in
time for the holidays.”
