We're going to look at potential problems of prolonged laptop use
and how these can be tackled with just a few simple changes.
The main problem with working on a laptop for prolonged periods
is that the screen can't be separated from the keyboard,
so it's difficult to adjust these to enable good posture.
By separating these elements, they can be arranged more effectively.
Using an external keyboard, mouse and screen raiser allows you to enjoy the portability of a laptop
and the comfort of a modern workstation.
First, use the screen raiser to bring the screen up to, or slightly below,
eye level, so that you can avoid tilting your head downwards.
Adjust the height and angle using the simple mechanism at the rear of the raiser
Then, plug in the external keyboard and mouse,
and bring them close to you, so that you can use them with your arms comfortably relaxed by your side.
It's also important that when carrying your laptop, you hold the weight as centrally as possible,
to avoid being pulled to one side.
So wherever possible, use either a back pack on both shoulders,
or a messenger bag held centrally.
The portability of laptops makes them very convenient,
but for regular prolonged use of an hour or more, use the screen raiser and plug-in peripherals.
When carrying your laptop, be mindful of bearing the weight centrally.
These simple actions can avoid the onset of aches and pains caused by uneven posture.
There will always be exceptions, and you also have a responsibility to work
safely and look after your own health.
You should let your manager know if you require further advice,
so that we can help you out.
