My name is Sonnie Lombeh,
I am a traditional birth attendant from Koibatormai.
My friend here is Mary.
If Sonnie had not been there
I would have been placed in a hammock
and transported to the next town, Vezela or Kolahun.
I explained to Sonnie that I had pains in my stomach.
She asked me when it had started.
I told her not too long ago...
Sonnie went back to her house, collected her material and came back.
She washed her hands and she checked me.
She told me I was in labour pain.
and that I was soon
going to give birth.
The date was August 22nd.
Praise the Lord
all went well.
Since I've started this job
I have not experienced any complication.
The powerless older midwives
called us, the younger ones, to assist them.
This was an opportunity
to carry on the mission
of being useful to society.
The traditional midwives are chosen in the community.
Because traditional midwives also play a vital role in the community.
They do a lot of sensitisation,
a lot of mobilisation
and they also take some decisions.
[Graduation ceremony for traditional birth attendants]
I was so happy when I graduated.
I was happy to see everybody
from the hospital and also the town chief and my friends.
I was so happy to have been trained and to receive my certificate.
I feel that I have grown as a person. It makes me so happy.
The training
that was given to Sonnie was not only for her
but for all of us.
There is no hospital here.
To find one we have to travel far.
This is why I am saying that whatever Sonnie has learned
she learned it also for the good of all of us
