I'm Michael Coteau, Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.
On March 20th, Iranians and Afghanis in Ontario and around the world, and many from parts
of Central Asia, South Asia, Northwestern China, and some groups in the Balkans celebrate
Nowruz
Nowruz, is the "New Day" of a New Year.
It is an ancient festival commemorating the first day of spring, with origins dating back
as far as 3,000 years.
Nowrouz is observed for 13 days.
According to custom, family members exchange gifts at the moment spring arrives, and then
visit their friends and neighbours.
In this way, people come together in an expression of peace, solidarity and goodwill.
Nowruz is a time for all of us to reflect on the renewal of nature, new beginnings,
and the opportunity to build stronger bonds between us.
Ontario's diversity is our strength. And I am proud to be a part of a government that
had the first day of spring recognized as Nowrouz in Ontario, in 2008.
We are fortunate to have strong and vibrant Iranian and Afghani communities which has
strengthened our province socially, culturally and economically.
We are One Ontario, working together to build a united province where everyone has the opportunity
to connect, contribute and enjoy a high quality of life.
I wish you and your family, and everyone across Ontario, a very happy Nowruz.
