My name’s Dan Briggs, I’m doing Automotive Engineering at the University of Huddersfield.
The quality of the facilities are very good, we’ve got excellent labs, we’ve got excellent
workshops where we can work on components and cars. We’ve got good machinery down
in the workshops as well, we’ve got great facilities in our design specs, in our design
studio. The tutors are very supportive if you want to go see them, if you’ve got any
problems they’re happy to help, even if it’s not their subject area, if it’s just
about how to write reports and how to use particular software,
they’re happy to help. The tutors do have a lot of real world experience, they’re
often able relate what they’re telling us back to examples that they did
in the real world to help us understand things better. My placement work was a year in industry
at Air Bus in Bristol and that experience has been invaluable in my final studies. The
best thing I’ve enjoyed about the course is probably getting involved with Formula
Student in my final year of Uni. That’s all of the universities around the world compete
to design and build a single seat race car and then you all go and race at events, so
every year we do Silverstone, and this last year we’ve done Hungary and Spain as well.
So, we built a car, funded it ourselves, found sponsors, designed it
and then went and raced it against the world, and managed to come out as UK number one.
I’ve enjoyed the University of Huddersfield very much, it’s a very nice place to be,
there’s some great facilities around. I’ll be taking away a lot of good memories, a lot
of valuable experience, a lot of professional experience as
well, how to deal with people in the work space, how to deal with clients and customers
and sponsors, so good communication skills as well.
