You can't have an international shooting event without rifles, scopes and lots and lots of
bullets.

RWS is co-sponsoring this event, offering competitors a chance to use its .308 Winchester
Speed Tip down the range and also to demonstrate the power of its new lead-free Evolution Green
bullet, again in .308.
It's very hard to see what happens with a cartridge, so we try to visualize the effect
of cartridges, of what the bullet does to the animal and how destructive it is, and
also the difference between different brands and different bullets.
Therefore the soap and the melons are two different media which show that in a very,
very impressive way. The soap is a more scientific way of showing what happens to the bullets.
The bullet leaves a permanent cavity so you can open it up and look into it and see what
actually happens in the animal.
The melon is the opposite. The melon shows a short-term effect. You can very quickly
see what happens to the animal, what brings it down. You can feel the brutal force. You
feel the 'dust' and the 'rain' of the melon all over the place. It's makes a fruit punch.
Everything is spread over a circle of 15 metres - so that it brings the message over impressively,
I think.
The Evolution Green range is currently available in nine calibers and the pace of ammunition
development is increasing. It might not be pushing technology as fast as Formula One
but the market expects innovation and quality.
Our industry - thank God - is a very slow and a very traditional industry. And our product
cycle is typically very, very long. So that makes us very laid-back people, and friendly
people. We can focus on relationships and keep the quality up. We don't normally have
to develop projects every two years. But now we are forced into that situation, and forced
in a very short way. If you look at the range of calibers that are out there - we have to
work with calibers within one diameter. It's quite a challenge to do it - and especially
when you have the time problem. And another challenge of course is that the requirement
only comes out of only certain markets while other markets still want traditional products.
You have to drive in two lanes. One is the lead-free channel and one is the regular,
traditional lead channel. So it really complicates the amount of products you have to have in
The hunting market is competitive so how is RWS going to keep at the top of the game?
We have a pipeline, within the production, of great ideas, and they are getting ready
to go to the market. But we still have to put some work into it and we feel that, for
certain markets, the green movement is very strong and is going to be there. We are going
to face it. We are ready for the challenge - for sure.
