Hi I'm Tim Gipson and I am going to talk to you about quieting a garage door. Now with
most garage doors these days they are powered by a garage door opener so when you have a
garage door opener on your garage door you have a lot of vibration that it is subject
to every day as it is going up and going down so over time there are things that can happen
that can cause it to be rather loud when it is coming up and going down and that's a good
indication when you do hear that if you are either in your garage and mostly you'll notice
when you are coming home at night but if you do hear something out of the extraordinary
that is when you need to go and you need to go ahead and start checking your garage door.
Now the first place that you want to look that is a common area for trouble is on your
rollers and this is where you can get in a lot. Now what you want to do is you want to
come through here and where these brackets are that tie these roller guides that go on
the track to the door basically just come over here and give them a little shake and
you want to make sure. Now this one right here just happens to be loose so in that case
most of these, these happen to be a 7/16 and the most preferred tool to use is a ratchet
if you have that or you can just simply use a either box end or open end wrench. So I
have this and there may be circumstances where you need both so what you want to do is you
just want to work these in and just make sure that these are down tight so that way there
shouldn't be any movement to that. Now where the roller is most of the time you do have
to use a wrench down here in these areas. Another area that you want to look at is where
the panels come together and you want to make sure that these places are secure as well.
Now if you tighten everything up and everything is tight and you still have some noise and
it still sounds loud when you are operating the garage door the next thing that is always
good is you want to keep these rollers lubricated and you can either use a light grease or even
something such as WD40 just to spray in there. The other part just to be considerate of is
also this chain on your drive, you'll either have a screw drive or a chain drive on your
garage door. Make sure that stays lubricated as well and if you check those areas in most
cases you can eliminate those noisy garage doors. Now if you go through all that and
it is still causing you some trouble you may want to go in and have a professional come
in and check it out for you. So I'm Tim Gipson and that's how you quiet a garage door.
