The Gundemonium Collection is what you should give to your significant other for Valentine's
Day if you know they are into cute anime characters and riveting, shoot-em-up gameplay that knows
few rivals. A series of games that fulfills the requirements to a Touhou fan's desires,
the Gundemonium Collection comes standard with Gundeadlean in its arsenal, a sort of
Metal Slug meets moe-type, girly anime characters. Indie development from Japan is responsible
for this intense 2-d shooter, produced by Platine Dispositif and published by Rockin'
Android. Of course, this style of bullet hell titles is somewhat niche, and competitors
in the circle of fan-made shooters such as these are few and far between, but I can totally
understand their rabid loyalty to the genre. The premise of Gundeadlean is simple: demons
from hell want to take over the world, and you, a girly mercenary wielding a massive
gun, are the only thing stopping them. I feel there is little else to say about this game
than the following: dodge and shoot. You'll be doing a hell of a lot of both, and earning
mucho points for it, all in a span of five levels that have artistic names like Schrodinger's
Black Cat or Hell Is On Sale. Bullets will fly at you from all angles and in patterns
you won't even see in trigonometry class. Fear not, however. Your only weak spot is
the heart on your chest, a little bit below your character's chin, and you'll be keeping
an eye on it more than you will be on your enemies at first, since staying alive would
probably be your best bet in moving through the game. There to assist you are six Matrix
Masters, each with different abilities that will assist you with destroying enemies or
keeping your reckless *** alive. Most of your success, however, comes from within. How good
are you at dodging bullets like raindrops while at the same time having the accuracy
of a sharpshooter? Dodging is rewarded by a stat called Friction, which, if you build
it up enough, amounts to a Friction Break that will turn the screen into a multitude
of gems. The soundtrack will have you tapping your feet as much as your keyboard during
gameplay, full of pulse-pounding beats and high fades that blend in well with the sound
of bullet-on-target and the powerups that you will earn along the way. Each level comes
with mini and arch-bosses that have their own methods of making you a confused lump
of shame each time you get caught in what can only be described as a bullet party. Eventually
you'll make it out, however, wondering how it ever happened. Using special abilities
in this game comes at a cost. Dodging bullets can be aided by a skill that makes them slow
down, although the time elapsed will not. When you are hit by a bullet and lose a heart
on regular mode, the screen will become filled with blue gems that will earn you hundreds
of thousands of points as soon as each bullet disappears from the screen. As you lay waste
to everything in sight, from flying pumpkin heads, witches on broomsticks, flying clowns,
and colossal battleships, you'll appreciate all the wonderful hand-drawn artwork created
to kawaii perfection. Gundeadlean has everything cute-em-up fans want in a game, and will challenge
as well as charm the most devoted fans.
