Today I am in Sweden – one of NATO’s most active, committed, and effective partners.
Earlier today I met Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt , and we discussed how NATO and
Sweden can work even closer together in the future.
For many years, Sweden has worked hard to make our world safer..
Swedish politicians, diplomats and soldiers have shown their commitment to peace and security.
Democracy and human rights. And the principles of the United Nations.
Those same values are at the heart of what NATO does.
So it is no surprise that, for two decades, NATO and Sweden have worked closely together.
In Kosovo and Afghanistan, Swedish soldiers stand shoulder to shoulder with NATO troops.
And in 2011, Sweden played an active role in our joint effort to protect the people
of Libya. So Io thank the Swedish people for their great
and brave contributions. But there is still more we can do together.
We are preparing a new mission to train, advise and assist Afghan forces after 2014. And Sweden
is already with us in planning that mission. We are working on multinational projects to
deliver capabilities in these tough economic times. And Sweden is involved in several such
projects, for instance a system to protect our harbours.
We are enhancing our training and exercises. And Sweden, together with Finland, will take
part in NATO’s peacetime preparedness mission in Iceland later this year.
All this will make our partnership stronger. Because in today’s world, effective security
is cooperative security.
