I’m Shara Aaron and I’m a registered dietitian.
Soy is a nutrient dense food which can help prevent diseases and help you manage your
weight. Eating the most nutrient diet that you can,
can help in disease prevention.
Nutrient dense foods also help with weight management because they provide more nutrients
than they do calories, so you’re not going to over-consume on calories. It leaves room
for balance in the diet.
Soy is definitely a nutrient dense food because it’s packed with nutrients. For example,
a half cup of cooked soybeans has 150 calories which is only 8% of a 2,000 calorie diet,
yet it provides 28% of your protein needs for the day, 25% of your iron needs, 20% of
your fiber, magnesium and vitamin K needs, so you’re getting a lot more nutrition than
you are calories.
The great thing about soy is it’s so easy to work into your diet. You can make a very
nutrient dense meal using tofu and vegetables to make a stir-fry. You could do scrambled
eggs with some soy crumbles for breakfast. You can have a soy veggie burger. There’s
soy nuts, soy milk, soy yogurt, soy cheese, soy bacon, soy sausage. The options are really
endless.
