We exported the lovely Lady in Blue by Vermeer.
It is a very beautiful, fine painting.
I’m Camiel Eurlings, managing director of Cargo at Air France-KLM.
I welcome you to the Cargo facility at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
KLM together with Air France and Martinair is internationally...
the biggest cargo provider in the air.
We ship 1.5 million tons a year...
to 350 destinations in 170 countries.
And we also have 160 offices worldwide.
This helps us stay close to the customer.
In addition to general cargo, like the pallets you see here...
we also transport specialised products.
We transport a lot of goods in normal aircraft.
Cargo is stored below the passengers.
We have many more ways of transporting cargo, such as full-freighters.
They only carry cargo, no passengers. These are for very large cargo.
We also have 15 aircraft with cargo behind the passengers.
These big 747s are 2/3rds passenger, then there is a wall...
and behind it an enormous cargo hold. Often for live animals.
We transport many animals. All different kinds.
Small chickens and birds to big horses.
We transport more than 50 percent of all horses by air to and from Europe.
We have a specialised animal hotel where we accept the animals.
And prepare them for the flight and house them when they return.
We transported a special panda from Vienna to China.
We're very proud that we have the world’s first animal hotel at an airport.
It is highly regarded by zoos worldwide.
As a car lover, which I am...
there is no greater place to work.
All the new, really special cars, the expensive Italian sports cars...
people around the world want to have them.
They all pass through these facilities. Often I leave my office...
to see what’s new in store.
We also transport a lot of art.
Like La Danse by Matisse, a very famous painting.
We transport hundreds of artworks a year.
We are a close partner of the renowned Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
We are happy to welcome The Blue Lady as one of our passengers.
She will fly with us from Shanghai to Amsterdam...
and then directly to São Paulo...
to a major exhibition in the Museu de Arte.
We are really proud to transport such a world-renowned piece of art.
We’ll make sure that The Blue Lady arrives in great shape...
and that she’ll be very satisfied with our service.
When a painting like The Blue Lady is travelling...
it is normal practice to send a courier. For safety reasons.
For making the right decisions at critical moments.
The safety of the painting is key, of course.
It should travel, but it should not be damaged.
The Blue Lady should return to Amsterdam in mint condition.
The choice of KLM as transporter for this beautiful painting...
is because we are based in Amsterdam.
And KLM has an excellent cargo fleet...
that flies to many destinations. Like São Paulo or Shanghai...
We always choose to fly KLM.
From the moment the painting arrives in Shanghai...
it will be packaged and boarded in a special way.
We'll ensure she has no problem with the G-forces during take-off and landing.
The painting is highly secured. It won’t sit among the pallets.
It will be in a secured area, with constant personal guards.
Then she will fly to São Paulo in the same secure way.
It has to arrive in splendid form.
That she is a happy passenger who wants to return onboard our flights.
When a painting or work of art comes to our museum...
they don’t open the box at the airport.
The painting comes to the museum untouched.
Customs verify the documentation.
But the art comes directly to the museum.
When it arrives in the museum it has to rest for at least 24 hours.
This way it can adapt to the local temperature.
There is a huge difference in temperature between the Netherlands and São Paulo.
The crate has to rest before it is opened.
When a painting leaves its home, in this case the Rijksmuseum...
the conservators examine the painting.
To verify and certify its condition.
When the painting arrives here conservators from both museums...
check the painting to make sure everything is alright.
Any changes are marked.
So everything is certified and verified a number of times.
Today we open the box and check the painting.
Then we place it in the museum.
And finally we arrange the lighting.
Light makes the painting come alive.
It is very rare that icons from the Rijksmuseum...
like The Blue Lady, travel the world.
Today it is in São Paulo, Brazil, a great destination.
There is only one airline that can transport something so delicate.
