[G. Glaros] Hi, I’m Gina Glaros, your host for the September 1st edition of IUPUI’s
The Spot.
IUPUI, yet again, moves up the list as an up-and-coming national university. Two years
ago, IUPUI was ranked 14th, last year 7th, and this year, IUPUI jumps to 5th in the rankings
of the 2011 edition of America’s Best Colleges, published in the September issue of U.S. News
and World Report.
Water, boating, and downtown fun on the canal! The second annual IUPUI Regatta is quickly
approaching. With events like the canoe race, movie in the courtyard, and the Herron art
contest, you don’t want to miss it. We spoke with Regatta Chair, Christina Bleeke for the
[C. Bleeke] The IUPUI Regatta is in its second year and it is a canoe race on the downtown
canal for students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Anyone is welcome to come to the event, but
to be in a canoe, you have to be either a student of IUPUI or an IUPUI faculty, staff,
or alumni.
There’s going to be a lot of different activities on the day of the event that anybody can participate
in. We’re going to have live bands including; My Yellow Rickshaw, Loo Abby, and Jeremy Johnson
and the Bleeding Keys.
We are going to have a DJ from Radio Now. We’re going to have a seventy foot inflatable
obstacle course, a bungee run, a dunk tank, pony rides, face painting, a clown, vendors
from local restaurants.
We decided to put on the Regatta because we really wanted to create a tradition for IUPUI
that really created a great experience for everyone and kept the students and alumni
coming back to the campus year after year.
The Regatta takes place right here on the canal. It’s September 25th. The first band
starts playing at 10:30, with the opening ceremony starting at 11, and the event will
last until 5 p.m., and for more information, you can go to iupui.edu/regatta.
[G. Glaros] You can still sign up your team for the canoe race or to volunteer at iupui.edu/regatta.
Get involved, while staying in shape! The Office of Intramural and Recreational Sports
is now accepting team entry forms for flag football, soccer, volleyball, and ultimate
Frisbee. You can get intramural entry forms and more information at iupui.edu/~iupuirec.
If you missed the first movie in the courtyard, you’re still in luck. The student activities
programming board, SAPB will be presenting two more movies this month. Catch Killers
on September 9th and Toy Story 3 on September 23rd. Both movies will begin at 7:30 p.m.
in the Taylor Courtyard. The rain location for both movies will be inside the Campus
Center, room 450.
Want to stay connected with other students on campus? Then get involved with IUPUI’s
Common Theme Project. With every common theme is a campus read. This year’s book is No
Impact Man by Colin Beavan. Capri Copp has the details on this year’s theme and your
no impact tip of the week.
[C. Copp] “Consuming Well for the Wealth of Communities, from IUPUI to the World”
is the title of IUPUI’s Common Theme. Join in for the second year discussion about the
consequences of our consumption and the healthier, greener and more sustainable communities we
might build here in Indiana and around the world.
Make impact with no impact. This year’s campus read is No Impact Man by Colin Beavan.
Beavan asks the question; is it really possible to live eco-effectively? Discover what he
and his wife do for one year to find the answer in an attempt to save the planet from environmental
catastrophe. You can purchase the campus read from your campus bookstore for 25% off. I
began reading this book last weekend, and it is a must read! While I won’t spoil its
contents, I will give you your no impact tip of the week!
Carry your own personal water container, and refill it. Also purchase a water filter, and
refill from the tap at home instead of buying plastic bottles of water.
Mark your schedules for the rest of this year’s common theme events!
There will be several screenings of the No Impact Man documentary on Tuesdays and Fridays
throughout September and October. The first screening is Tuesday, September 1 in the Lilly
Auditorium, University Library 0130 at 3pm.
You definitely will not want to miss No Impact Week, which will take place Monday, October
4th through Saturday, October 9th. Find out what you can do each day during no impact
week to help make a healthier, greener planet.
Also, the author of No Impact Man, Colin Beavan will visit the campus on Wednesday, November
10th, so plan ahead.
Soon you can find the details for all the events for this year’s common theme at events.iupui.edu.
I'm Capri Copp, JagTV News.
[G. Glaros] Think you have what it takes to be an IUPUI campus ambassador? If so, SOAR,
the student organization for alumni relations, might be for you. SOAR is now a closed membership
and is currently accepting applications. The deadline is September 13th. For more information
and for an application, visit iupui.edu/~SOAR.
That’s it for The Spot this week. Be sure to tune in on September 15th for the latest
campus news and student activities at jagtv.iupui.edu.
I’m Gina Glaros, and thanks for Spotting us!
