Borrowing equipment at the GRC
the GRC has a wonderful collection of equipment that it
loans to the FIMS graduate community we have lots of different tools to help you
with projects and presentations
or to experiment with out if your own curiosity
any masters or PhD student
in library and information science, Health Information Science,
journalism media studies and popular music and culture programs
as well as faculty and staff are encouraged to borrow equipment
all we need from you is your contact information and a signature
we offer iPads digital cameras tape recorders and
ereaders for overnight loans, our computer accessories are available for two hour
loans only
if you need to record images or video to capture an event
or to use for a project you can borrow a digital camera or camcorder
overnight from the GRC we have tape recorders too
all of these devices come with batteries instructions and a carrying case
for your convenience
we have three different types of ereaders available for you to test out
we have a Kindle 2 Kobos and 2 Sony Readers
the GRC has some simple guides to downloading and reading books on these
devices
borrowing ebooks from Western Iibraries or your public library
or download free e-books and poetry from
project gutenberg: if you want to experiment with apps or use a tablet
for your course work
the GRC has you covered we have to iPad
and two newer faster iPad Minis the GRC also lends a variety of computer
accessories for up to two hours
this is super convenient for those days when you accidentally forget your
headphones or USB key at home
we also have a data projector to computer makes and a microphone stand
to help with your school projects and presentations
if you need to record or edit sound our computers are equipped with Audacity
Lab B is also equipped with Camtasia which is awesome for making tutorials
there's also a Mac
computer in lab C which has iMovie and GarageBand
if you have any questions about which software our computers seats your
project's needs
feel free to ask us and we can point you in the right direction
we have instruction cards for all of our devices to help you get started
just ask for one when you borrow a device the GRC staff are knowledgeable of our
equipment
you can send us an email or ask for help at the service desk
if the equipment is out of batteries let us know we have those too
Loan periods for equipment are overnight only
that being said if you wish to borrow your device for an additional night
you can pop into the GRC and ask the staff to renew the item
for weekends and breaks we can make special accommodations just ask us
