Hey, it's time for us to put the cap on the chimney. Even though it's really hot and in
midsummer, we gotta start thinking about winter. They say an eco-friendly house can't be built
in 150 days for $150,000, and I say it can. I'm Allen Smith, join me as I push the limits

Home. Well, Bob, did you get up there and we're you able to measure it? Yes, sir, we
got up there and took that board off the top and and got some measurements around the whole
chimney cap. Yep, yeah. And it was kinda slippery on that metal roof, but other than that we
got it done. Pretty dangerous. Well, I'd like to see the model of a chimney cap -- did you
bring one? We have one up on the front porch. Oh, okay, let's take a look at it -- get out
of this heat. Alright. Okay, Bob, I see it here, yeah. It looks like a giant bird feeder.
Pretty much does, but it's designed to protect the top of you chimney. Is it heavy? No, it's
really not. Not real bad. Yeah, very good. It's made out a powder coated metal, so it'll
stand the weather. Right, right. I like the dark color because you don't -- you're eyes
are drawn to it. Uh huh. Yeah. So what are the benefits of having a chimney cap? Well,
of course, it's gonna protect the crown of the chimney, which is the very top, instead
of just a flue cap, which would still allow the water to land on top of that and eventually
find its way down to the fireplace. This protects the whole top of the chimney, and it helps
to keep the rain from getting in it. About the only time you'd get any rain on there
would be on if it was on a straight driving rain. Right, that'd come in just directly
from the sides like that. So, Bob, does this actually go on the outer edge of the chimney
itself? This whole thing goes around the outside of the chimney. I see. And then how do you
attach it because we have really high winds? Yeah, the way we attach it is with a Tapcon
-- we screw it into the brick, actually, with a Tapcon screw. Right, very good. And I can
see this wire mess here is gonna keep any wildlife from getting any ideas and going
down into the chimney. That's correct. And it also acts as what they call a spark arrestor.
So if you're getting a bunch of sparks coming out of your chimney -- I see -- they're designed
to try keep it in here so it doesn't fall down on your roof. Yeah, or extinguish -- they
extinguish themselves before they get out. Before they get out, that's correct. Are all
the ones that you create are they all custom made? Everyone is custom because there is
no two chimneys in the world that are the same. I see. So, Bob, how long will it take
to have one made for chimney here? Well, normally, it's gonna take anywhere from four to five
days. Four to five days. Alright, well, let's get after it. We'll get it built and bring
it back. Well, thank you so much. Okay, thank you. I appreciate it. Hey, if you're enjoying
these updates on the house: As you can see, we're just about finished with the construction
of the house. But hang on, we're gonna be doing the decorating and the landscaping.
