Well, the emergency procedures guide is a laminated guide that we put together in this
district wide. Those guides are located by every campus phone and we even have some employees
that request specific copies for their own personal use on their offices which, we would
do that upon request. But, if you look at the guide and I have one here, if you look
at it, it's tab color coded and it covers probably 95 percent of the incidents that
may occur at the campus or the employers or students may be exposed to. It gives little
tips in a real brief explanation what is expected during that emergency. If you look at it specifically
it shows severe weather, tornadoes, we even have a bomb threats section, we have an active
shooter section, we have evacuation sections. So it's meant as a guide I don't mean employees
to memorize it, but it is there for them to use and look at, at the event they have a
few minutes to say "okay, what should I do if the fire alarms go off." We all tend to
forget when the fire alarm goes off what we are supposed to do. Even though from kindergarden
and on we are taught what to do but, we forget as we get older. So, we have to remind them
and that is what that guide is for. They don't have to memorize it but it is there for reference
and it is color coded.
Well, there are a few things that everyone can do. College campuses are not immune to
crime, everybody knows that, but there is a number of things students and employees
can do to prevent themselves to become victims and they are very simple things. Don't leave
your personal items out, don't leave your door unlock, don't leave your personal items
exposed in your vehicles, which everyone tends to do. We are in madison, it is a large city
and crime does occur and the colleges itself is not immune to it. What we try to do with
students and employees is give them tips on things they should and should not do when
they are here. One of the things I really press on people, is always trust your gut
instinct. If something doesn't look right, feel right, it doesn't smell right, it is
probably not right and don't second guess that. Give us a call and we will send officers
to investigate what appears to be out of place and we can deal from there. What happens often
is that we will get a call after saying I saw this individual by this office. It didn't
look right but I didn't say anything. Well, 30 minutes after what happened we get a call
because of a laptop was taken.
Well, the WolfPack alert system is a text system that we use. Is a free system for students
and employees to use and what we use it for as many colleges have a version of that system,
whatever they call it, we call it the WolfPack alert and what we use it for those alerts
generate from our office. They are emergency messages, messages that directly affect the
safety of the community. It is not used for marketing information, it is not used to tell
you that your class has been cancelled although, we had instructors to ask us to do that. It
is not used for things that really don't directly affect the safety of the community. So, I
really encourage people that have it not to ignore it.
