Before you go on stage, do you set a specific goal for yourself?
Yes I certainly do.
The main thing for me is to try and say something important,
so a program for me is not just a succession of some works,
but building a program I try to make the listener feel there is a unifying idea in it.
Most of all I try to avoid a mere entertainment,
a fleeting enjoyment of beautiful sounds,
and so, even when I put small pieces on the program
I try to make an interesting and meaningful combination.
My dream and my highest goal is
when the audience do not pay much attention to the performer,
but discover something new in themselves,
their inner world growing more rich and subtle.
Tonight you are playing some of those miniatures, Rachmaninoff Romance and Shchedrin Humoresque.
As far as I know they are among your favorites.
What could you say about them, why do you like them?
Well, I've been playing Rachmaninoff Romance all my life.
It is very precious to me,
I love the piece very much.
For me it is a truly vocal piece,
and in general, I've always liked Rachmaninoff very much, ever since my childhood.
That poignant note in his music, it is also there in the Romance.
