I mean, what happened with Andrew is we took part in the Channel 4 Diversity Scheme
because, you know, amongst other reasons I think that our office and our room is sort of, hideously not diverse in many ways, and...
[You've got disabled toilets!]
We have! It's true!
--That's alright then isn't it?! --
[I wanted to work on 'Panorama', but they didn't have a bog!]
[so I ended up with Iain!]
-- Well if there are any people from production companies - get a disabled toilet!! --
Yeh! And a lift!
-- You'll widen your scope immediately! --
I mean, I'll tell you what it was for us is that, we saw lots of different people from lots of different backgrounds for the diversity scheme
I mean I'll tell you what it was for us, is that we saw lots of different people from lots of different backgrounds for the diversity scheme
and lots of people wanted to be actors, and what we actually wanted was a runner, and Andrew came in, bless him and said
'I'm not very good at making tea' and we're like 'yeah, OK', but...
he knew...we talked about five or six different stand up comedians in his interview
he'd been to the latest show they'd all done
he had the DVDs, he knew every single...watched more sit-com than we had
and so we're thinking: 'well here's someone that is passionate about comedy and does know a lot about comedy...
isn't exactly what we were thinking, you know, we were looking for when we started the scheme, but actually is clearly someone we should be working with.
-- but you actually did. You got involved in the scheme because you thought... -
Honestly? cos I think that...this is so boring, but I'm going to say it anyway!
the thing about it is, when you're thinking about writing
like 'The Inbetweeners' comes from an authorship perspective, I suppose, for Damon and I.
We both grew up in middle class London suburbia, and so we wrote about our backgrounds
and so we wrote about our backgrounds, and I think that often in television, you're looking for stories
and the more diverse a background, the more different life experiences that people have had from your own
the more likely you are to find a different comedic perspective I think. And the more likely you are to find
people who are gonna write something that surprises you, or you enjoy, or that's different when you're pitching to Shane or Darren or people
and so that's what it's about for us, it's about, in a brutally commercial way, how can we find people with different stories to tell
with different jokes to tell from our own...
