marketing and welcome to the mojo show we're live
on the air with eds kirka who's gonna teaches
all about public speaking tips so how to get
paid to be a keynote speaker had to get paid to be a
leadership key note how to get paid to be a motivational speaker his gonna talk
all about that his a
considered as one of the top Toastmasters if you're familiar with toast
masters
and yeah actually has one an esteemed awards here
called a his achieve that distinguished Toastmaster credential
in 2003 he is a member Toastmasters International
and he essentially has the
highest credentials available for Toastmasters
and he has been featured in such companies as
Beiser pharmaceutical are also textron
Raytheon bank America
he's also been featured at harvard Medical
school as well as Brown University as well as MetLife
and many many other amazing organizations
any strange over this 3,000 participants
and his is a is course called public speaking
work out so he also speaks at schools all around the country but he's
is really gonna teach you about what is it takes to be a motivational speaker to
be an excellent speaker somebody who can
pronounce well that carry a message
insight and excitement from the crowd and generate a response
and there's hardly out there like and can really make this happen so Adam
please to
introduce you and welcome to this show
are you doing today fine Cory thank you let's just make one thing perfectly
clear for everybody that's it
distinguished Toastmaster credential nothing extinguished toast master credential
hahaha my bad yea distinguished that's okay
I yeah I definitely don't want to be extinguished at a
exactly yeah I do I don't want to be and yeah it was good at what they do you
know all of what that means is that you have essentially
done some things that not very many people happen you that's why you are
signed out
from amazing organizations worldwide that wants you to train
their people their top talents I helped you
be come a better public speaker because it's one of the things that people are
really
really fearful about their scared about it and you have a knack
for breaking it down piece by piece and helps you
bring up the level up there their talents and abilities while also
diminishing their
fear and anxiety so what are we start of um
there and what topic would you like to talk about first when it comes to you
becoming a motivational speaker break
Alright, for whatever someone is going to speak about Cory
you know it could be to secretary at the office giving at
two-minute daily report it could be somebody speaking at their church
or so many given the big corporate presentation
ninety percent in my experience
and having trained over 3,000 people ninety percent of the world's population
not use the US
but ninety percent of the world's population has a tear public speaking if I do a
workshop with 10 people there's always one person says well you know I just
never picked up that
fear and for women or girl starting
it they were usually in pageants have some kind they were dance recital
certain you see recitals work they were on stage young age
and got a lot of positive feedback for guys maybe it was in sports for a game
you seeker
order something like that where they were on stage and got some positive
feedback being on stage in front at that
that big audience most of us
never get any trainee in public speaking
sure if we get any you and God bless all high schools the
have drama club send am debate clubs to give people training
but most of us don't get any above the three thousand people like trained
how I would say only 15 maybe 20 percent of people have actually taken that
public speaking 101 or communications 101 course
I didn't when I was in collage and you would have tie me up in drag me
kicking and screaming
at that point in my life in order for me to
to go to one of those courses consequently I graduated from college
went into the
military as a young lieutenant and I
really was in the leader because I he had that fear
of public speaking and just even
even doing some training with I was in the postal unit over in germany for my
time in the military
and just speaking to adults any group love it also was great 101 outgoing
personality
but put me in front of grouping is always is this I had that fear my
butterflies woke up and started flapping their wings
and it really negatively affected my career
as I got on in my career I'm 66 now but as I got on in my career
I became more comfortable I was a contractor I was good at selling myself
but again
anytime I had to speak before an audience those fears kick back in and
fifteen years ago i join Toastmasters in
Toastmaster change my life bottom line is that 2 years in my Toastmasters
experience
I noticed there was one thing missing and that was the hands-on coaching
that we get from a good maths teacher or
our basketball coach baseball come swim coach ballet teacher want whatever
skill or art were trying to master with every skill separate right the master
and having net teacher
or the coach put their hand on her shoulder look it's in the eye
and you'll say something nice who's because they want to build this up
but at the same time they're going to give us some action
we can take to correct are
what we do and improve our performance
and the better the coach the more efficient enough on in the affair an
effective
that process is going to be the bottom line is most others
don't get any training in public speaking ice worked with people that
have said all our corporation brought in this big time training corporation your
communications training in a
videotaped our sales presentations and I got more out your workshop in four days
than 24 hours the night
didn't two days with that big companies so my approach to everything
is just like a basketball coach and there too
reputations as I proudly claim and the guy who makes public speaking fun
am i'm the basketball coach a public speaking so whether
the audiences ever play basketball or not care if it's
ballet your whatever skill even a
a good boss is a good mentor right
I use that hands-on coaching map it in you'd
nobody sits on the bench everybody gets out there on the court
and and performs and occasionally there's somebody
says you know virtually in the basketball parlance coach I can't do
that
well a lousy coaches say okay go sit on the bench to work with somebody else
such
on the kinda coach that I like see great coach but on the coach says no I'm not
let you get up
give up get out there in let's do it again and again and again
and I'd challenge anyone in the world this is my soapbox now
a challenge anyone in the world to tell me how learning
to become comfortable and confident in your public speaking skills
is any different than learning a jobs skill or how to play basketball or
swimming you're riding a bicycle or learn math or
art dance music anything. we learn something
we take action and chances are pretty good the first time the actions not
really great
soul the basketball coach is OK you know do that foul shot again or
do that lay-up run that play again the math teachers can say work those
that problem again well will be we ever get that in public speaking
soak what my what might work shop is about
make training instead okay to still
speak for two minutes tell us about yourself am
a a I'm well my name is a a am
will okay in a you know I got a brother in a dog in
you know this is what I do for a living okay that's fifteen seconds at it two
minutes what stories can you tell and then we do it again
and we do it again and we do it again just like we do with math problems are
basketball skills
so the second time we do anything
is easier and more effective than first time
the third time is easier and more effective in a second guess what the
fourth time is easier more effective than the third
so it's just a matter of repetition I offer
the opportunity to to go through that model love learning
and doing taking action with some experience coaching
if someone joins the Toastmaster club we have 13,500 clubs and 116 countries
right
around the world so whenever somebody lives probably one not too far away
and a if somebody wants you to Toastmaster .org
on the first page says put in your zip code in
it'll give you a list of all the clubs within 10 or 25 miles whatever you want
to do
so Toastmasters I always make this analogy for Toastmasters might workshops
because if anybody out there is a Toastmaster understand that they always
put up a clear glass
ethical law clear an ethical
clear glass wall the everything I do when the Toastmaster side is free in
volunteer because
I'm just another Toastmaster in despite my credentials and experience
I'm just not the Toastmaster in everything is free and volunteer
we want to talk about my workshop now on its cargo
basketball coach public speaking and it's my business
so Toastmasters
going back to basketball now chief you wanna develop your skills
you cannot high school for 10 years yes when you get into an after-work league
with your friends not join the on the
NBA but chance are you gonna go to the YMCA
in you know that on Monday morning Thursday afternoon sunday afternoon
you can go down to practice getting a pickup game butts
no deeply do I i don't see any video
heroes to let me see everything do that an easy then
me there
it seem to have lost said
that are you there
that are you there
that they getting here you can you hear me OK okay
I don't think we can hear you try it again at
you there
you are muted okay can you hit your head on your cell
although insect
Justin YouTube
hmm
mmm
I'm gonna see if they consist II you know well done sir
up
to your headphones and put them back in
home there I'm gonna head
once you go click that link again okay
how we going now Corey
in
you can hear me now let me put my headphones back a yield
we all said the internet world said alright %uh
well got less technology our yeah I don't know if
your head I I ago where react
why I think I was about to make the analogy between Toastmasters in what i
doing might workshop
it Toastmasters setback ball analogy
even the downing at practice at the YMCA anytime you want
shoot some hoops getting a pickup game that's what Toastmaster assist public
speaking
you know that every two weeks months community clubs meet every two weeks
some clubs meet every week
but you know that every time you could do Toastmaster meeting
you're going to get something here to learn something if you speak you can add
benefit from it its it's a cumulative
experience nice most this experience to the issue what you can get something
when you come to my workshop or or in my training
I'm there like good if you want to get your skills quickly
the basketball skills you can go higher professional basketball coaching in a
good his workshop he's gone a trillion trillion trillion won those skills
so that when you leave their four hours later eight hours later
Juergen your skill set new knowledge your experience
everything is going to be at a higher level and that's might workshop is
its I hesitate to say
in state conferences is almost instant conference almost instant comfort
Iwork with people who are professional speakers mid-level speakers
and people shaking in their boots
I promise anyone who takes the training
they're going to come to a higher level and it doesn't matter
what you use those for or given a book report
or that big time executive having at the big report or
leader we anything in between I anyone who takes it raining at promise them
that they will be much more comfortable and confident
in the time that we spent together excellent so
so basically you're saying a couple things that you know
in order to be a paid speaker you first got to learn about being speaker
right and say you have to have you acted
to to be trained yet to be trained in order to do this
and also you have to have a great coach that's gonna teach you
at a have the best public speaking
and motivation skills possible if you don't have those
nobody's gonna really wanna pay you to speak because you won't have the skills
necessary in order to do that the third thing is
preparation right you gotta be you know your preparation and
and repetition in its a kinda doing it or
and over and over again so those are the three key elements you're being paid
being a paid speaker is you gotta have a
first be trained second a great coach and third just
do it over and over again with that repetition
yes nobody's gonna become a paid basketball player
without going through the grade school high school college
in into the Pro so yes you need to get the experience you need the coaching
behind you
and as for speaking goes becoming a top motivational speaker paid motivational
speaker
and it doesn't matter what filled you're in with your doctor training other
doctors or whether you're
an underwater basket weaver training other under
underwater basket weaver most people it was certainly within a corporation
people are trained
for what they're supposed to say about their company about their product like a
sales presentation
most people are trained in and have the experience
to know what they wanna talk about you know with the need to impart to their
audience
what bothers most people about
doing at is Ogie public speaking in my butterflies act up in
so quick to training and going over all the basic skills and public speaking
putting that platform
where my with my cam your putting that clap swarm together with
whatever knowledge you have that you wanna speak about
you know those who two key factors there
so yes you have to have the basic continents in the experience
just like Basketball you know how to do rules can I do a false lay-up shot you know I
have to know how to do a way up there are basic skills and public speaking too
and that the culmination
of public speaking skills are developing this stage presence
the confidence to be yourself on stage
its like a sales presentation one on one
the first time you do it there's probably a lot on and
what we gonna say next well you do five sales presentations you gonna be a whole
lot better than the first one in
a year later after you done 50 or 100 you can be really fluent
for there's no difference in anything that you're going to speak about but
nobody's gonna pay you the big money at a high paid
professional speaker when you just starting out
believe me I did lots of Boy Scout troops and Girl Scout troops and for
each club's
then other than moving up to adults you know twenty-five dollars in
in a free lunch to speak at a Rotary Club you get gotta earn your wings in
the speaking
feel just like you do in any profession awesome!
she first incorporation they're not gonna make you the CEO
behavior men yeah exactly so
so let me ask you this because you had many many many paid
speaking I'm opportunities that you've
unearth and uncovered and and attracted
so so tell me how does one get to rate the honor
a bankof america or
phys-er to have them
come to them and say hey I'm we were gonna pay you to speak
in front of our organization for our team in front of our people
how did you handle that are happened how did that get looked at
it started with in sales
they see the easiest sail this to a warm leader Warren market
she and certainly having having someone working with incorporation who is
experience my workshop and told their boss about it
and ill soul are a lot of leads have been open that way a lot of my
opportunities
been open that way and den its
like anything else marketing any product to a corporation
getting in there are sending it lead a demo tape for
with Google Hangouts your YouTube it just makes everything
a lot easier now than back in the olden days
share so OK okay good
I'm did you want to say something more on that I was just going to say it
a you had mentioned something a to me before about
being a keynote speaker up a keynote speaker
is again a very highly-paid professional want you had that recognition
and I I I know someone who is
not really experienced speaker but the guy climbed Mount Everest
don't show he's got a lot of people in organizations calling him to
to speak in cash he's still in it who
pretty much his first Europe speaking is your thinking did but a year and a half
two years ago
soak he's got a lot to learn speaking site but
if you have a reputation for doing something you write that book did
everybody wants to read
or in my case workshops where somebody tell somebody else in the corporation
well I'd like to go to that workshop to too
and develop those skills awesome okay good
so and yesterday you know happens by
can happen by osmosis but you know definitely some marketing aspects to it
and it I mean you're not going to ever get there
in less you practice your speaking and
you know it's so so to happen a couple a different ways but unless you're
climbing Mount Everest or
you know you've overcome some kinda really major challenge
you know what about the rest of us so that's where you know getting in there
marking what you do is being really good at the speaker opportunity is really
comes into play and
I miss you want the most matter occur as possible when it comes to this
so the bet you are the more you more powerful at this stage presence you have
the more than
impact a deep emotional impact
that you have in people the more likely you are to get
them say oh yeah you know yet a great editor
yes speak at our fans and he was amazing he blew the roof off a
you know everything else in is was the best
presentation at the entire bet so and
see at you know I i'm glad you're sharing all this with
a with us because a lot of people tend to think that
you know it might be you know they can just decide they want to be a
motivational speaker keynote speaker and just go out there and do it now
while you can maybe maybe you have some good look at the beginning I mean it's
it comes down to skills you gotta be able to deliver
and that's where ads I trade group Kansas
really come into play so and what would you say
and if the subject is a couple just a couple insights into
presentation styles really excellent
presenters where summers where so many things that really excellent presenter
do
that you know I I'm sure there's hundreds and hundreds of things
but just give us said I could just give us a few
items there that would help somebody was listening to this go out there
become a better public speaker
immediately I the first when it comes to mind I mean
above everything Cory his passion
you've got to have a passion for what you do in its like
like going to work every day if you hate going to work is kind of s drudge
if you look forward to going to work you're self-employed or you ask me if
I'm passionate about teaching public speaking my workshop
the answer is yes and he had noticed the thing is
passion is the key because some the basic skills a public speaker
or voice variation I contact demonstrating continents your movement
and if you're standing in front of an audience in you don't like what you
doing in could really care less
think back to all the professors we had in college that put us to sleep for the
hour the year with that we should be getting rebates from them she
and European it when it the analogies little story she told me workshop is a
yet for a deep automobile race either on television I action
I think most of this app what happens when there's a big crash
yeah I agree race what say
over they stand up don't ABC the big crash n burn
have you ever paid to go and see a speaker a singer a performer crash and
burn
now we want you to be the best speaker we've ever heard and see
and and its our that's what the audience wants
it's our obligation is a speaker to give them that
best show and to demonstrate good public speaking skills and you with with all
the things I mentioned
and to demonstrate the above all your passion
and use your stage presence when you have the confidence to be yourself
speaking or ten or hundred ten thousand
as comfortably as if you were talking I don't drink coffee so
as if you re speaking one-on-one over doctor patrick in kitchen table on a
Saturday morning
I like doctor pepper somebody's got sick
I yeah all good okay good so it got down
we've got a couple those two something you know what's
talk about done besides repetition where some other confidence builders that
people to have when it went up your speaking day
well you know a reputation really key
because you've got to go out and do with the first time
no matter what your faith how strong it is isn't
wanted the expressions are used some people have to face the fear
of public speaking other people have to face the fear of facing their fear
other people have to face the fear facing the fear facing their fear to go
up into it
so you do that first one in you analyze it dislike a sales presentation or
you know you an and after operation report in the military or
that team meeting after a game you know the coaches this is what we need to do
to improve
what you have to do data analysis on yourself what could I have done better
if you can see a video what something it sure
you know win would make the whole process more effective and then you say
next time I'm going to open with this line and then I'm gonna bring in this
point I'm gonna leave out that point
so how are you going to improve your performance for for the next time
after the last three years I'm gonna say this in a humorous way knowing and
explain
I've been in and outta prison for the last three years
yes every single Wednesday night for the past three years
in Rhode Island here I have gone into the men's maximum
maximum-security state of our state prison
and i lead a Toastmasters we call the speech craft program
in but it's been in Toastmasters is kind of a community outreach program she can
be taken into work
senior citizen center a business or anything we just happen taken into a
prison
and we're in a 12-week program we see work with but well worth the time
but the first night at the program those guys are
they're like deer in the headlights but I've helped I'd help the start 23
Toastmaster club
at major universities and corporations
and including Harvard med school in
defies reason so many other ones the thingy is
it snowed the other care somebody's got to PHD's in their making a million
dollars
whatever corporate position when we going to start a Toastmaster club and we
asked to stand up and say the wrong name heard
tell us about your favorite are the favorites works we get that same deer in
the headlights think
will in 12 weeks we take these prisoners strong
you know two hours each Wednesday night for 12 weeks
and at the end to that that program ok you know to not gonna go out we could
make a million dollars is motivational speaker but whether they're speaking to
the parole board
or going for job interview when they get out your speaking at the NA programs
though a a program's they all say how much they got out at the program and how
much he changed
and I saw that happen in my life to my Toastmasters experience in
you know I see the same thing with other people no matter what their experience
through their level
when they join Toastmasters and start developing the skills
this white so important to me one other thing that I see developing their
and within Toastmasters two track program
communication and leadership we haven't spoken much about leadership
I mentioned before the when I is in the military I didn't feel like a leader
cuz I
always said that fear of training
and in the public speaking but
if you're that entry level person you with experience
and performance you might get promoted to the next step in 10 years she might
be a sales manager instead of a
salesman when you go up to that
management position you're going to have to make some presentations
and so many people fear that you know a at
a little scenario would be the boss comes to entertain Joe you're on the
here on this team with bill deal had a car accident the second be able to give
the big presentation next week
you're on the team and i want you to speak instead
I'll boss not me I hate public speaking you know get somebody else
well that's a real career maker isn't it so
I just ran into so many situations like that would people have told the story that
the kind amid a glass ceiling because they were free to the public speaking
they were never going to rise any higher smoke effect the booking ready cash
a unity a lot executives at I ask that question can you tell me a story about
somebody with your experience
and then I asked the observer
you
alright movie left-wing whoever Latin back in just a sec it
p
aren't there we go King yup
can you hear me now I can hear you
I can you tell you there we go
there we go sorry it will let's wrap it up
%um UK
yeah I can hear you I'm just turning my phone off here okay sanski
alright way to relieve up
where you're going we were talking about leadership and when I want to stress
is that to be a leader it's so very important to have the skills
I'll also do teaching with boy scouts
in a toga you develop the skills get consummate
standing up in front of your your trooping
and speaking to people and it carries on into
I think the skill should be taught from kindergarten on up if they're nuts
so yeah I you ask me about a time in which I was freaked out about speaking
and I remember the first sight really stage fright at was in fifth grade at my
teacher mister hechos giving or
or Eagles I was doing it alone there's nobody else to help me
I had this little flash cards and I was like scared out of my mind
and you're right I think I think it should be taught earlier on in people
might have
more success with the at a younger age
ingredient brace it in really come i mean when you doing to go negotiations or
doing a presentation which year
you know in in your job in which you're presenting a new project a presenting
the financial as a presenting
you know if your lawyers any core enemies are always in which you need to
know how to present are you presenting your case for race
it all boils down your presentation powers
and this is yeah it's really important that we
that we do this so and so things that I really appreciate you going over the
important aspects so
a really becoming your ultimate speaker
a public speaker motivational speaker
leadership speaker and I think
this is back this information So once you can tell them a little bit more
about where they can
hear all about to you edit and
you know well actually happily it'll be up here's the link that you can check
out
okay it's at
mojovideo.org/getpadtobeaspeaker
okay mojovideo.org/getpad to be a speaker it will direct rights
to that stuff in
and and its more his information like his public speaking or
workout once more more details like that but that but thanks for share yet is there
anything else you want to leave the audience with
before you go yes Corey something very important that we didn't cover
and that is that fear of public speaking
translates into people working with your product and
any internet marketer anyone who wants to make a video
that's your public speaking on stage in front and audience
it shows up to infer that being read I yen so many people hold themselves back
from making videos still let's face it is one of the primary in ways of
marketing yourself
now or on the Internet and how important it is to get
video after video out there and a lot of people just
the refuse but not refuse but they retrain from it because they have that fear
and along with that some people say well you know gotta face radio not
not the camera so I'll do a Power Point did not speak behind the power point
want a quick
if you want me by your product you better have that same passion that scene
confidence in that same enthusiasm
when you're reading from your script issue do is if you're on camera
a guided yeah because what your saying is very huge and I want you guys write this down
these days public speaking can also mean being on video
and in order to you dry in a tractor right crowd
you better user public speaking abilities to create
really kick butt videos a lot of people are it's the same here to get on camera
that it is to get in front of the stage if five people ten people a hundred
thousand people it's the same period
just don't let it hold you back and might be comfortable in your speaking
abilities
you will be able to you I enhance
your abilities to do video and video marketing so that's a really
really important point and it's really powerful practice
and thanks for bringing that up here alright good so
so that's it for today signed at No josho
on how to get paid to people with speakers and public speaking tips
information in from for mister ed skirt who is
really a fabulous speaker you know known as the
distinguished Toastmaster and
is it has been all over the world sharing his
is information so I thank so much ed
and we're gonna wrap this up and once again
mojovideo.org/getpadtospeak and we put some more information out
there on where you can find out more about and his
his conquests in the speaking round men in teaching people and corporations
