Today we're going to talk about YouTube categories.
That's right, YouTube categories is
what we're talking about today.
Specifically, which ones should you
be picking up for your videos and why
and what difference does it make.
We're going to talk about that coming up.
Hey, guys.
My name is Tim Schmoyer.
And what is your name?
Zeke.
Zeke, and how old are you, Zeke?
Three.
Yeah, this is my son who wanted to join me
for making a video today.
And so today we're going to answer a question
from Ken Tremain about YouTube categories.
I have lots of videos with different topics.
Should I separate them all by different categories?
Will that give me more views?
Or should I put them all under entertainment
because, basically, they'll all fit under that category.
That's a great question, Ken, one that I get asked a lot.
For example, what if you're doing
a video on how to play tennis.
Do you like to play tennis?
Uh-huh.
So should that go into the category about education?
Should that go into a category about how to?
Or should that go into the category of sports?
Which one?
I like sports.
Sports.
And why should it go in the one about sports?
I didn't--
Well, the way I like to think about it is this.
If someone is browsing each of the videos of these categories,
that's actually what the categories
used to be for so people could browse
through different categories and that has now
gone away for the most part.
But if you're browsing a category, which person browsing
one of those categories will be most
likely to be interested in your video.
So would it be someone browsing the how to section?
The education section?
Or the sports section?
In this case, I think, someone who's
most likely to watch a video about how to hit a tennis ball
and how to play tennis that would fit best in the sports
category.
People in the education category might
be looking for academic stuff.
Is that funny?
Why is that funny?
Because you're laughing.
Oh, because I'm laughing.
And then people in the how to might
be looking for a lot of different things.
So-- I'm glad you find that funny, little guy.
Do you know what difference it makes
for people what category they put their video in?
No, you don't?
Well, I don't think it makes much of a difference, actually.
I think it might influence how your video shows up
as a related video to each other, but other than that,
I wouldn't stress too much about which category
your videos go in.
Find the one that you think is best appropriate,
most accurately describes your content,
and someone that are browsing that category
would be most interested in your video and pick that one.
But at the end of the day, I don't
think categories-- I think they're still left over
from the old browsing days on YouTube,
which are kind of over.
OK, are you done making videos?
Uh-huh.
OK.
I actually talk more about this in my upcoming e-book,

Right?
What those people have to say.
Did you know a lot of these people
who watch Video Creators are spreading messages
