Hello! I'm Scott Sasaki and this here is Jasun Hicks.
Hi!
He is Activist for gay rights and Deaf events here in Las Vegas and a few other cities
He is the founder for Deaf Night Out.
Can you tell me what Deaf Night Out is?
Deaf Night out is; you know before when we had Deaf Professional Happy Hour, or DPHH for short now that's transferred and become DNO. It's for all of the nation. It's a place where Deaf people from many communities can gather and have fun.
It happens once a month in each area.
Groups can party and go out for drinks, food, and can meet other people
and see old faces and just do whatever.
cool
what cities are happening soon. [having an event soon]
ah, for DNO?
few already lined up
Florida has 2 lined up for different cities, we are working on that next.
Kansas, Washington DC, Las Vegas here, Phoenix, and there is a few more that were working on.
I'm excited about that, were can I go for more information?
You can go online to deafnightout.com
I understand that you also work as interpreter coordinator for Washing DC, Los Angeles and San Diego Pride Festival.
What Do you do in that field?
Well, they tend to contact me 2 months in advance
for planning for interpreters, see I'm a volunteer interpreter
I try to steal really skilled interpreters and interns that need to gather up more hours of experience
good, understandable people and I work with them and schedule them with an all day event
filled with a parade, speeches, music, festivals and a lot of other different things
Do you have a lot of fun doing that?
Yes because I want to see Deaf people feeling like they have full access
if they feel lost and are wondering "where do I go?" can they ask for help?
we gather a group of us that can wander around and look at things and buy stuff if we want and still celebrate.
Can you share with me your favorite story about Pride or working with D.N.O.?
during pride my favorite thing I enjoyed was naturally the music and the different DJs on the stage
all of the performances and the special guests, famous people come and there are two interpreters on stage for us.
Have you met any famous people?
Yes I met Kathy Griffin
Does she have a show here?
ah its in San Diego, but also in Los Angeles and Washing DC.
In Washington DC it's the same, they have protests too.
When pride is finished, I get contacted last minute for protest marches like for gay marriage or anything they contact me because I am on their boardcommittee
so i gather up---
Were you scared to work at a protest?
No, I'm not afraid of protests. I believe that everyone is equal and I support that.
so I gather up some volunteer interpreters, and I get to meet famous people
--I noticed you have pictures with Ad--[am] Bouska famous photographer for NOH8 campaign, now your picture is all over.
Bouska and his partner Jeff asked me to be the leader for the Deaf NOH8
It's nice, It's an open group, not Deaf only. We want hearing people involved too.
Their rights are equal too
Hearing people love the Deaf world
We've been growing, we have about 22 ASL pictures so far
For the open hearing NOH8 we have over 3500 pictures
Can people set up an appointment to have a picture with Bouska?
No, we only set up appointments for famous people we know with Bouska
for open pictures we a time and a place people can go like from 1:00 pm to 7:30 at some address
pay a fee to get in and get the make up and clothes
Does Bouska live in LA?
AH he lives in Hollywood
that's not far from here
well thank you soo much for sharing with us
