Hi folks! Two days to go before my trip,
I want to present the equipment I'm taking with me to the desert
starting with me:
This is the basic clothing I'll be wearing
these are special walking trousers
made of a light fabric to keep you refreshed
this bottom half can be removed to turn it into a short
regular t-shirt
a hat to protect from the sun
and this buff, which is multi-functional
but the most important is
in case of a sand storm
to protect the face
but it has other uses like as a headwear, etc.
This is the rucksack I will using during the day
Its purpose is to carry the stuff I will be using during the day
During the trek in the desert our stuff
will be carried by the porters and the camels
so this is only for what we will need during the day.
This is called Camelback
it goes inside the rucksack
It has a capacity of 3 litres of water
it's very practical
the recipient goes into the rucksack and this hose comes out
it hangs out of the rucksack and
when you want to drink some water
you put this in your mouth
(there is water in it)
suck it and the water flows
very practical.
Adding some more capacity, a small 1 litre bottle.
This is a walking stick
I'm not sure if this is going to work in the sand
it is supposed to be used in firm soil
or in the snow; this thingy is to help you on the snow
let's see if it works in the sand; I will try
it's not crucial but it helps
when you are walking for a long time
it's good for you to keep the balance
obviously it is not this size, it extends.
This is my sleeping bag
we don't need to take a mattress or a sleeping mat
because they will provide, but the sleeping bag is essential
specially because at night in the desert
the temperature can reach below freezing
this sleeping bag is good down to -3ÂșC
thus it will keep us warm enough.
An interesting thing in this trip is that
despite the fact they will provide tents
you have the option to sleep outdoors
which is a custom amongst the desert people
since it doesn't rain, it's easy
I'm gonna try - sleeping under the sky.
This is my small pillow
I like big pillows but what can I do?
will have to sleep with a small pillow.
This duffel here
is to carry the remaining stuff
which is not being carried in the day pack
it is going to be carried by the camel
and we can make use of it at night or when we stop along the way.
This is my snack pack
or emergency ration
we don't need to take with us anything special for food
because they are going to provide
but, in case of an emergency
or in case of a craving emergency
we can make use of this here
there is Toblerone, chocolate,
coffee, tea
biscuits
there is enough stuff here.
This is my GPS watch
with it I will be monitoring the route we will take
I hope I will have some mobile signal along the way
so that I will be able to transmit to you the route done each day
Essential for this is my inseparable iPhone
which will enable me to transmit everything to you
this will be the only mean of communication with the world.
Talking about these gadgets, it is also important to talk about this
someone must already be asking:
"How are you going to keep your phone and cameras charged?"
This is a solar panel, Power Monkey
which will enable me to charge my devices
with that which is most abundant in the desert, the sun.
First aid kit
in case of any eventuality.
Mosquito repellent
I don't know if there is any insect in the desert, there is no water, but, just in case.
Chlorine tablets to desinfect the water
in case of, again, any emergency
in case I need to drink from a standing source.
My Swiss knife, multifunctional.
The headlamp which is excellent
let me see if I can turn it on
very practical since you can use without occupying your hands.
In order to document the trip to you
my camera
zoom lenses.
This is what I'm going to use as footwear
I'm in doubt about what to use to walk in the desert
there are two options
sneakers, special for walking
I have them for a long time, it's well used
it's important in a trek like this not to use new shoes
and also a walking boot
pros and cons
this is more comfortable for walking
but I don't know if
being short, if it's going to protect against sand entering the shoes
I also don't know if, in relation to the softness or hardness
of the soil, if it's going to more practical to walk with something more flexible like the sneakers
or something harder like the boots
the boot protects more but it's slightly less comfortable.
These are the gaiters
exactly to protect and to avoid
the sand entering the shoes
let me try to show
you place it here
and wrap it around your leg
so that you prevent the sand hitting here
from entering the shoes.
Socks, important, there are two layers of socks
these are all special walking socks
made of special wool, it doesn't absorb humidity and
and let the perspiration out
this is the internal sock, thinner
and the external one, thicker
why two layers?
because it prevent blisters
since one sock slides against the other
and you have less friction against your skin.
This is something interesting I bought recently
it's a towel - it's a pity that you can't feel it
it's a towel special for sports
and it is extremely refreshing
so, for you to dry your face during the trip, it's very good.
This is fantastic. You take it and it seems to be wet.
Actually it needs to be a little damp but it lasts very long
What else? I think this is it.
There is a winter hat to protect from the cold
as I said, at night it is very cold.
And inside the duffel there
my training trousers, a fleece.
So, I think I'm well equiped.
Wait for me
You will hear from me.
As a last message
