Frequently when parents hear that their child has a diagnosis of Dyslexia almost the first
question they ask after will he complete school is, will my child have a successful and productive
life as a Dyslexic? The answer to that question is very positive. We can only look at the
successful Dyslexics in history Einstein, Mark Twain, we believe Lenardo Divnci and
so when we think about can one be successful and productive we have to first look at what
are the talents of each individual that will permit his education and his experiences in
life to maximize those things that he wants to do, wants to put effort into, and is capable
of doing well. When we think about the role of reading and writing and spelling in the
life of successful and productive Dyslexic we have to think about ways in which this
person can use the tools available in our society today to make life easier. For example,
computers today have things on them like spell check and grammar check that permit people
to write effectively with the help of computer tools. We have books on tape that permit people
to read even technical material that they need to have access to in efficient way. There's
even a little tool out on the market that is called the Reading Pen. You may literally
take the pen out of your pocket, put it on text, and it speaks to you the words that
are on the page. There are many technical tools available for people with Dyslexia today
to make their lives easier. If they salesmen for example, they should always have with
them a calculator. If they are people who are in business they should hire really good
secretaries who can take dictation. They should carry tape recorders with them as note takers.
There are things that can be used to replace the demand on reading and spelling in one's
life or to support your ability to use those skills to the very best of your ability with
the support of technology.
