Beginning Guitar Lessons | 4 Chord Pattern Song Examples
Turn around pattern in G, it's a simple platform called pattern used for many songs. In this
video, I'm gonna show you some examples of how to use this and apply it to learning songs
so the four chord pattern in G to start is G minor and C and D. We called this a turnaround
pattern G minor, C, E. We could also use numbers to indicate where the chord is in the scale.
This is the I chord, the VI chord minor, the IV chord is C and the D chord is the V chord
so we called this as I-VI-IV-V, I-VI-IV-V .
This pattern has been used in many, many songs and this one's in the key of G. Of course
you can use it in any key. Let me show you a couple of examples in the key of G (strumming).
I'm gonna go ahead and sing just for your educational purposes.
Oh my love, my darling, I've hungered for your touch. A long, a lonely night ... and
time goes by so slowly and time can ease the pain, with you --- be mine, I need... that's
Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers. A lot of people know that especially this
is the theme from Ghost, the movie ghost.
How about this one, Sherry ---- I can't sing it that high so let's change that to the key
of C so it's the same chord pattern same numbers it's I-VI-IV-V but starting with C so now
C is the one. The 6 chord is A minor, the F chord is the 4 chord and G is the 5 chord.
Sherry, Sherry baby please don't cry, Sherry baby please don't cry so there's a good example
of why am I changing keys.
Now you probably noticed that I played the G7 instead of a G there its common in a I,
IV, IV, V to make the V chord into a 7 so what I mean is instead of a G which is going
to be a G major chord, I turned into a G7 that's common in that type of progression,
not a 100% don't look for that.
How about another one, When no one else can understand me, key of G. When everything I
do is wrong, You give me hope and consolation, You something -- something .. how about ... Ohhh
Ohhh, Donna I have a little girl, Donna is the name.
Now, here's another one. I'm gonna change up the chord. Listen to this (strumming) that's
Moonlight Samba from my heart coming home CD that's a I-VI-IV-V progression in the key
of G, look different huh. Well, that's a G chord but I have altered it. I've changed
the G into a G major 7. It's really just a G chord with a couple of notes added, sounds
fancier.
The next one is E minor 9. It's an E minor with a 9 add it then comes C add 9, a fancier
version of the C major chord and finally a D7, it's another fingering of a D7 same chord
as that. Now, listen to it, same root movement. What I mean is that the names of the chords
are the same G, E as in E minor, C to D. The root is often the base note of the chord also
not always but it's the note that they used for the name of the chord. G, G major 7, E
-- E minor 9, C -- Cadd9 and D for D7. Listen (strumming). I'll put in the base note, listen
that's a C and a D, E, C.
Okay, that's it for now. See you in the next video.
