March 22, 2016. A Syrian refugee in the Idomeni camp at the Greek-Macedonian border set himself on fire in protest over closed borders. This happened during a demonstration in which 3000 people took part. Some of the people managed to put the flames out and carry the man to the nearest ambulance. "At night I was thinking that if I set our tent on fire - the tent where me and my wife and kids sleep, that we would finally have peace. We ran away from the bombs, the e gunshots, the arrests and the injustice, but we found ourselves into an even bigger injustice here", says Hassan Abu Ahmad - a refugee from Syria. The number of migrants in Greece tops 52,000 and no one knows what will happen to them. The UN agency for migrants announced that it has stopped working on the Greek isles after the agreement between the EU and Turkey turned the registration centers into migrant detention centers. Until March 20, new migrants were only registered in these centers, but not they cannot leave them. "It is still unclear what will happen to the people who arrived before the magical date when the agreement came into effect. It is very important to note that nearly 60 percent of the refugees looking for shelter, or the migrants - whatever you want to call them, who come to the Greek isles, are women and children. A large part of them are running away from the Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts", says Kitty McKensy. It is an option to recheck each refugee individually, but according to the UN agency for migrants, Greece does not have the capacity to do so. Meanwhile, the latest information concerning the camp in Idomeni specifically is that people will be evacuated in April, but it is unclear where to.
