Mary Jo Sekelsky: I think it's safe to say that my philosophy is students come first.
I like to think of education as a continuum and we are able to meet each student in the
place that they're at on that continuum and help them move forward. Transitioning from
a commuter to a residential campus has been one of the most beautiful things that we have
experienced as a campus. Housing has changed this campus in so many wonderful ways. I think
it's very difficult now to be on the University of Michigan-Flint campus at any time of the
day or night, 7 days a week, and not be able to find something to do. Being involved in
student life, being a student leader, being a part of a student organization gives students
the opportunity to have the edge when it comes time for employment. It's so very important
for students to have a resume that indicates their leadership, their initiative, their
drive, and their passion for things both in the classroom and in the community. I have
had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with probably thousands of students over the
last 25 years. It's fun to look back and see the difference that one person can make.
