- [Voiceover] Grass Land Jam
recorded during the annual Minnesota Bluegrass
and Old Time Music Festival at El Rancho Manana
near Richmond, Minnesota.
(banjo music)
Grass Land Jam showcases
the main stage performances
presented during the four day festival
by regional and national bands.
Now from the main stage,
Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out.
- Give Russell a big hand,
this one's called Erase the Miles.
(audience applauds)
(gentle acoustic guitar)
Do you miss me
In Carolina
Well I miss you
In Tennessee
Do you wish I was there
Beside you
Well I wish you
Were here with me
I know it's not
The ideal situation
My heart's become a part
Of the band
It's a common hazard
In the occupation
You know I love you
Just as much
As I can
So I'll dream
'Til I hear you love me
And I'll hope
'Til I see your smile
Wish I could hold you forever
And somehow
Erase all the miles
(mandolin solo)
(fiddle solo)
Well tomorrow
It's Pennsylvania
Then it's off to the city of sin
I'll hold to your love
And to your memory
Until I can see you again
So I'll dream
'Til I hear you love me
And I'll hope 'til I see your smile
Wish I could hold you forever
And somehow
Erase all the miles
Wish I could hold you forever
And somehow
Erase all the miles
(audience applauds)
- I don't know why I'm tuning this,
it's in acapella.
I'm not gonna be playin'.
(laughing)
Just outta habit, I guess.
Anyway, We'll Soon Be Done
with Troubles and Trials.
One of these days I'm goin' home
Where no sorrows ever come
We'll soon be done with troubles and trials
Free from heartache pain and care
We shall all that glory share
Sit down beside my Jesus
Sit down and rest a little while
We'll soon be done
We'll soon be done with troubles and trials
In that home on the other side
I'm gonna shake glad hands with the elders
Tell my kindred good mornin'
Sit down beside my Jesus
Sit down and rest a little while
I shall behold His blessed face
I shall feel His matchless grace
We'll soon be done with troubles and trials
Oh what peace and joy sublime
In that home of love divine
Sit down beside my Jesus
Sit down and rest a little while
We'll soon be done
We'll soon be done with troubles and trials
Troubles and trials
In that home on the other side
I'm gonna shake glad hands with the elders
Tell my kindred good mornin'
Sit down beside my Jesus
Sit out and rest a little while
Sit down beside my Jesus
And Lord I'm gone
Sit down and rest a little while
(audience applauds)
Well Jesus heard me prayin'
He hears the words that I'm sayin'
I just washed my soul
In the waters from on high
I say mean and evil thoughts around me
And the evil deeds would bind me
King Jesus if you leave me I will die
I will die
Oh Jesus hide me
'Til the storm is over
Won't you rock me in the cradle of Thy love
Feed me from Thy blessed hands of love
'Til I want no more
Take me to that blessed home above
Home above
Now won't you make my future brighter
And make my burdens lighter
And help me to do good wherever I can
I say when the host of sin surrounds me
And the evil deeds would bind me
King Jesus hold me in the hallow of Thy hand
Of thy hand
Oh Jesus hide me
'Til the storm is over
Won't you rock me in the cradle of Thy love
Feed me from Thy blessed hands of love
'Til I want no more
Take me to that blessed home above
Home above
Oh Jesus hide me
'Til the storm is over
Won't you rock me in the cradle of Thy love
Feed me from Thy blessed hands of love
'Til I want no more
Take me to that blessed home above
Take me to that blessed home above
Home above
(audience applauds)
Thank you very much.
Why is it always the smallest guy in the group
is the one that sings the bass?
So uh, anyway, without further adieu,
this is called My Window Faces the South.
(upbeat bluegrass music)
My window faces the South
I'm almost halfway to Heaven
The snow is fallin' but all I can see
Are those fields of cotton
Wavin' back at me
Yeah my window faces the South
Though I am far from that Swanee
Oh I'm never frowning or down in the mouth
My window faces the South
(banjo solo)
(guitar solo)
(upbeat bluegrass)
Oh my window faces the South
I'm almost halfway to Heaven
The snow is fallin' but all I can see
Are those fields of cotton
Wavin' back at me
Yeah my window faces the South
Though I am far from that Swanee
Oh I'm never frowning or down in the mouth
My window faces the South
My window faces down South
(audience applauds)
- Thank you very much.
If you like coal mining songs,
here's one called The Bottom of a Mountain.
- [Voiceover] Up next, the energetic mix
of quality bluegrass and gospel music
with Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers.
I was born in West Virginia
Where the land
Is black with coal
For a man to feed his family
It takes 12 hours a day
Diggin' in a dirty black hole
Way down
In the bottom of the mountain
Way down in the bottom of a hole
Way down
In the bottom of a mountain
I'm diggin' and sweatin'
Loading that dirty black coal
Some men give
Their wives jewelry
Some men give
Their wives gold
But all I give to my sweet woman
Is a few dollars made
Diggin' out dirty black coal
Way down
In the bottom of a mountain
Way down in the bottom of a hole
Way down
In the bottom of a mountain
I'm diggin' and sweatin'
Loading that dirty black coal
(banjo solo)
(fiddle solo)
I draw script
For most of my money
I never see
A lot of that
I work all week and go to church Sunday
And I pay the preacher
When they pass the hat
Way down
In the bottom of a mountain
Way down in the bottom of a hole
Way down
In the bottom of a mountain
I'm diggin' and sweatin'
Loading that dirty black coal
Way down
(upbeat banjo)
I'm diggin' and sweatin'
Loading that dirty black coal
Whoa whoa
(audience applauds)
- Everybody takes a turn now,
when somebody lights in on somethin',
you just go nuts.
This is called the Steel Guitar Rag.
(fast bluegrass)
(guitar)
That's his (unclear) lick, let's hear it for him!
(fiddle solo)
Big finish now.
Big Minnesota finish.
(audience applauds)
We had a Facebook request come in
while we were on the road yesterday.
Some folks said we can only be there Saturday
and they wanted to hear this song.
On this cold November morning
Here I stand
At the grave site of a long forgotten man
Thinking of the friends he lost
For love of gold
This sad story through the years
Has oft been told
Fallen leaves that lie scattered on the ground
The birds and flowers
That were here can not be found
All the friends he ever had
Are not around
They are scattered
Like the leaves upon the ground
Lord let my eyes see every need
Of every man
Make me stop and always lend
A helping hand
Then when I'm laid beneath
That little grassy mound
There'll be more friends around
Than leaves upon the ground
(fiddle solo)
Some folks drift along through life
And never thrill
To the feeling
That a good deed brings until
It's too late and they are ready
To lie down
There beneath the leaves
All scattered on the ground
To your grave there's no use taking
Any gold
You can't use it
When it's time for hands to fold
When you leave this earth for a better
Home someday
The only things you'll take
Are what you gave away
Fallen leaves that lie scattered on the ground
The birds and flowers
That were here can not be found
All the friends he ever had
Are not around
They are scattered
Like the leaves upon the ground
(audience applauds)
Winos
Skid Row Joes
Some on vagrancy
They got all kinds in the Boston jail
Now they got me
(upbeat bluegrass)
In the county jail in old Boston
They got all kinds you see
From all walks of like they come
All lost their liberty
Now some's got wives just outside
Waitin' for their return
Long timers short timers
Some are waitin' to burn
Wino Skid Row Joe
Some on vagrancy
They got all kinds in the Boston jail
Now they got me
(fiddle solo)
Now some will say just yesterday
I really had the jack
But paper and pen got me locked in
Them checks come a bouncin' back
And late at night when the lights go out
They tell their tales of woe
About old friends and places they've been
And where they'd like to go
Wino Skid Row Joe
Some on vagrancy
They got all kinds in the Boston jail
Now they got me
(banjo solo)
It ain't gonna last.
(laughing)
It ain't, it ain't.
You all hang in there with us.
But it's too late their big mistakes
Condemn them to a cell
Where every dream's a forgotten thing
Each day's a living hell
Listen guys if you're wise
From this town you'll run
Or else you'll find you're pullin' time
In the jail in old Boston
Wino Skid Row Joe
Some on vagrancy
They got all kinds in the Boston jail
Now they got me
Wino Skid Row Joe
Some on vagrancy
They got all kinds in the Boston jail
Now they got me
(audience applauds) Thank you!
See you in the morning!
We'll do this and be out of the way.
It's called I Wanna Be Loved But Only By You.
I want to be kissed
But only by your lips dear
For you're the only one who'll ever do
I want someone to hug and call me honey
I want to be loved but only by you
I want someone to help me in my sorrow
I want someone whose heart to me is true
Somebody who will stay with me forever
I want to be loved but only by you
