and that might sound strange but I think the number one thing
that needs a lot more tension is self-regulation
we can teach someone
what it is that you need to know if that's holding an afghan or
like I said operating computer whatever they're gonna do
the question is if you get upset
can you handle that
do you know if you do when you're really upset or frustrated
or uh... so some of its regulating emotions but some of it
is also um...
regulating uh...
sensory issues do you know when you get overwhelmed
you have strategies to say
you know uh...
I'm uh... overwhelmed on a sensory level
uh... to such a degree I got to take a break for a few minutes
uh... or and also
I see a lot across the spectrum and autism physical regulation
a lot of us can't tell
were exhausted
or hungary
and that does impact behavior
if you don't have enough fuel
you lose the ability to concentrate there's very simple techniques like for
example you can use a five-point scale
and so someone let's say who's more visual
uh... less academic uh... academically inclined ur uh... doesn't gravitate
towards that well you can you just use colors
so you know if you're you read you need a break if your green you're okay you
can focus
just being able to say
to an employer
I'm read I need five minutes or I need my support person or something so that
you don't get
the behaviors coming on when someone's just gone to frustrated and now they
can't regulate themselves at all
uh... that uh... like as it across the spectrum
whether someone's got a p_h_d_
you know is working more on you know adaptive living skills across the
board I see this regulation issue really impacting work
and than other thing I would say
is self advocacy
but again uh...
I qualify this by saying a lot of people think self-efficacy uh...
is just stating what you need
almost as if it in a one-way type of process like I need this okay maybe get it
for me self advocacy is more um...
asking for the combinations or the strategies or the support that you need
so you can get
done what you trying to get done and so that you can contribute
so that you can purchase
we need these people we need their skills
uh... it's not about saying oh I'm autistic therefore I don't have to do acts
or I can't handle doing handled doing acts so awarness is saying I need to do acts and these
are the things they're gonna help me get their so that I can be
a contributing person I can participate
