I wanted to read for my children when they were young.
I couldn't do it.
I didn't know how to read and write.
I was born in Guyana and raised by my grandmother.
I couldn't focus on school
because the chores at home were so much.
I'm here thanks to my youngest, she brought me.
She went on the Internet.
She said, Mommy, we are grown now, and what do you want to do?
I said, you know what I want to do and always wanted to do.
I want to learn to read and write.
And it's more important that I have this opportunity to come to this library
to do what I wanted to do all my life, learn to read and write.
If you really want help, you can't be afraid, you can't be embarrassed.
I was never embarrassed by my situation,
because I realized that it's not a crime not to know how to read and write.
I want to read now for my great grandchildren as long as I'm on this earth.
I want to read for all my families,
my future generations to come.
I want to be able to read something to
them and tell them, too, my story.
