The paradiddle is one of the first rudiments I learned when I started playing drums. The
paradiddle is incredibly useful on the drum set. I've already done a whole series on using
paradiddles to create beats and fills on the drum set. Being able to have facility with
this one on the drum pad is really important to being able to execute whatever you want
with the paradiddle on the drum set. The paradiddle basically consists of two alternating strokes
and two consecutive strokes, and it can look like this. So in this series, we're going
to look at a whole bunch of different ways that we can play this, that we can accent
it, that we can add things to it, and the most important thing, as with any rudiment
is timing is key. And then we can start talking about adding in dynamics, adding in flams,
which are other types of rudiments. Make absolutely sure that you keep in mind the hands switching.
Even though we're playing alternating strokes, the hands can still switch three times, even
though it's four strokes. So keep that in mind, and then we'll get into some of the
exercises.
