If you're a young one wannabe filmmaker pop some popcorn and go get your parents. Really. Go get them. I'll wait.
OK. We got your parents and you all sitting together, all cozied up with your popcorn.
Let me say right off, that this video isn't going to have fancy graphics, and all
sorts of visual eye candy. It's just me, talking to you, the budding young wannabe filmmaker, and your parents.
I can't say this video will make me popular,
but I've never cared much about popularity,
and I've got a few things I'd like to say.
Now, the amount of emails and comments I get from young wannabe filmmakers,
on how they can't get support from their parents,
and what should they do about it,
is absolutely staggering.
For those parents that support their children in their filmmaking endeavors,
well done and thank you.
For those that don't,
let's have a little talk.
Now you, young wannabe filmmaker. Oh, you thought I was going to blame your parents?
Let's do something different, and
we'll get to those "awful" parents later in the video.
Here are some examples of all those emails and comments I received from
young wannabe filmmakers:
My parents won't support me. They think it's a waste of time.
They won't buy me a camera. They're afraid I will give up filmmaking.
They think it's just a passing fancy.
They want me to do other things first.
They're afraid of cyber-bullies and stalkers. Etc., etc., etc.
OK. Put on some armor,
because here it comes.
I hate to tell you this,
but, you are not "entitled" to be handed everything to you on a silver platter,
just because you want it.
Take a look around you right now. You've probably got a computer, a cellphone,
a bed, lamps, a house to live in, heat, furniture, a school to go to, a bike or car, gadgets, toys,
a refrigerator with food in it, and maybe even some money in your pocket.
All that came from...
your parents.
And I hate to say this,
but, you're not entitled to these things, just because you exist.
Your Dad or Mom or whomever you live with,
works their butts off to provide you with all this stuff.
And frankly,
you should get over your entitlement issues, and realize these people do this,
because no matter what you think,
they really care about you.
So, quit your whining, man or woman up,
and help these people out.
They don't support you making videos, or support you becoming a filmmaker?
Well, what are YOU doing for these people, who live their lives doing everything possible,
to provide you with the things you need?
I'm not trying to make you feel bad - my filmmaking point is coming.
Let's say your parents work hard and make, say, $90,000 a year.
After taxes they have about $65,000 left over.
Between food, clothing, school, goodies,
and everything else you "need",
they're "paying" you about $20,000 to $30,000 a year, to keep you alive and happy.
On your "salary",
if you can't support your parents for a few simple requests, like homework, chores, decent grades,
or just not being a jerk when asked to do something,
you'll NEVER make it as a filmmaker.
If you worked for me,
I'd just fire you, and get someone else willing to work for their pay.
If you really want to become a filmmaker, or anything for that matter,
and you need or want your parents support in doing that,
then you need to roll up your sleeves, and get to work.
The filmmaking business is hard to break into, and once you do,
you're going to be working about 80 to 100 hours or more each week.
That means you'll have very little time for ANYTHING else,
if you want to eat and continue to have a career.
The answer to, "my parents won't support me as a budding filmmaker", lies in you.
If you really want to do this,
show your parents this is something you really want to do, and, work at it.
Filmmakers, by definition are MAKERS of FILM. They don't just talk about it.
If you REALLY want to be a filmmaker, then quit being a problem, and start being a solution,
or you'll never make it as a filmmaker.
There's going to be a thousand other people in line behind you, that aren't whining,
and can work, and they'll get the jobs.
And if you find that is not politically correct,
or offended you, or you're entitled to be treated better, or
I hurt your feelings, or, you think it's too much work,
well then, too bad.
Filmmakers are not politically correct, not easily offended, don't feel entitled,
don't usually fall into that deep dark abyss called "my feelings are hurt",
and are willing to really work.
Now, dear Parents of young budding filmmaker.
I've seen a few parents super-critical about their child being a filmmaker,
writer, musician, or artist,
because they should be choosing some more "sensible" career path.
I've also seen parents
try and super-control every move the child makes along their chosen career path.
Usually, the parents themselves have tried to reach some goal earlier in life,
failed,
and now they want to make sure the child doesn't make the same mistake, fail,
and feel that pain.
i think it's pretty awesome that a parent cares so much for their child
that they would do everything they could
to protect them
from that kind of pain.
Unfortunately,
it's not totally rational, because that person, is not YOU.
It takes an awfully big person to not place their own "karma" onto their own children.
It also takes a rather sane person to recognize children are,
their own person,
an individual, different,
from everyone else.
So, you, young future filmmaker...
if you really want to be a filmmaker,
and you're willing a roll up your sleeves,
and do the work necessary to achieve what you want to do...
and you, awesome parents of young future filmmaker...
if you're willing to take a chance on your budding filmmaker,
let them make the mistakes they will inevitably make, and support them, if only in words
i think everyone will end up a lot happier in the long run.
Other than nature itself, artists,
and I include writers, musicians, filmmakers, and
anyone who creates wonderful things, are the only people I know who bring beauty
to the world.
i don't know about you,
but i think this world,
can use a lot more people like that.
I hope this helps thanks for watching!
