Red epic vs. F55
Red Epic The Red Epic has got the raw only onboard
recording. This is due to change when modules ships to give you pro res and DNHD options.
What the Sony F55 has done has been quite useful and you are able to shoot both formats
simultaneously - although it's still early days on that front because the XAVC isn't
necessarily supported in all current software. So you might have to upgrade your Avid or
your Final Cut to get to the point where your XAVC files are supported. Most edit houses
will always be a couple of versions of software behind what the latest is. So although the
latest may work, it may not work for your particular project, so there may be a transfer
step.
F55 In terms of Latitude, the F55 is at least
on a par, if not pipping what the Red Epic has got. The chip in the F55 is a regenerated
version of chip on Red Epic albeit with different architecture. When the dragon sensor comes
out for this camera it will be more of a comparison where the manufacturers are in terms of their
chip development. F55 is a great chip -- the log files in the 60-bit wall give a lot of
information, as do the raw red files as well.
They both shoot very high res and they're both capable for 4k acquisition.
